Complaint Review: Pep Boys

Pep Boys is a ripoff; they damaged front axle while on lift for a brake inspection. Garner, North Carolina

I took my 89 Ford Taurus to Pep Boys for an estimate on a brake job. I got the price quote, and was told my cv joints were in need of replacement. I didn't ask them to touch the axles!

The next day, the cv joints on the front right axle were clicking and clanking badly. I looked at the car and sure enough the boot is all torn up. I called to complain, and they deny responsibility.

Normally cv joints do wear out and need replacement. However, there was no noise or damage until I took the car to Pep Boys. It is obvious that the mechanic used a screwdriver to "check" (rip) the boot. After a few miles of driving, the grease leaked, and without lubrication, the cv joint breaks quickly.

the scenario described is highly unlikely. if the cv boots had been cut, it would take several months for the grease to all leak out of the joints and the joints to deteriorate to the point that they would be clicking.

there is no way that it would be clicking the next day! i am a master tech for peps and if i see broken cv boots, you can be sure that i will try to sell you new ones. is that a rip off? no, actually a lot of customers appreciate knowing what is in need of repair on their vehicles.

if the joint was clicking the next day, i would have to say that the boot had been split open for quite some time. customers have a tendency to become more aware of noises after their vehicle has been serviced. sometimes these noises have been there for quite some time but not noticed. this should not be taken as a insult to customers but as an acknowledgement of a normal tendency.
