This story, that happened to my daughter in law at the Richmond Pep Boys, is unbelievable.

My daughter-in-law took her car into Pep Boys to have new tires put on. The mechanics called back about an hour or so later, and told her that she also needed new shock absorbers, new tie rods, and new bracks and she would require a complete tire alignment. She agrees, except for the brakes, because, she has a good friend who can replace those.

She arrives two days later (they said it would take a long time), and receives a bill for $987.

She takes her car to her friend's shop to get the brakes replaced. He calls her back later, and asked her to come over. He points out, while the car is on the lift, that nothing has been done to the car, except the tires were replaced. No hubs, no shocks, no alignment, nothing. The dust, parts and all have not been touched under her car.

She takes the car back to Pep Boys, and speaks to the manager, who puts the car on the lift

He does agree that nothing has been done to the car, and refunds the money, except for the tires. No apology for the attempted rip off, he doesn't even appear to be disturbed about the matter.

If she had not had a friend who could look at the car, she would have had no work done, and would have been out the $1000.

These guys should be shut down.

I had something similar happen. I sent my fiance in to get tires installed on my van. I told her to get the tires only dont let them sell you anything else. Well she called me from the shop. They were trying to tell her that she needed an allignment, the front shocks needed replaced, the ball joints were bad and needed replacement. She called me and asked what should I do. I told her to wait and I went down there. I asked to see the service tech and show me what all needed replacement. Lo and behold when i told him i drive it almost everyday I would know whats wrong with it. Sure enough all he said was it needed the new tires and everything else was fine. I think that when they see a woman coming they figure that its an easy mark. When a guy questions them they change their tune.
