Performant Recovery sent my 90 year old father a collection notice for a Wells Fargo student loan.  The claim number is 90021642963.  The amount is $5416.31.  The notice is dated October17, 2013.

My father is a WWII vet.  He was an eingineer-gunner and flew in 50 missions in a B-24 over Europe.  Three of those missions were over the Polesti oil fields.  On September 24 he flew back to Washington DC on a chartered 757 with about 80 other vets on a Honor Flight to visit the WWII Memorial.  He had to have a caretaker because he has macular degeneration and can't see well.

Performant Recovery's collection noitice flustered and upset him.  Since he can't see, he thought he had misdialed and somehow got a pornography site.

I, a son, investigated.  Wells Fargo Bank has no record of a student loan in his name.  Same with Sallie Mae.  The federal goverment has no record of a student loan under his social security number.  No loan, no record, no debt.

I investigated further.  My father testified he graduated from high school in 1941 and has had no formal schooling since then.  He did receive eingineer-gunnery traing after being drafted into the Army Air Core but Uncle Sam paid for all that.  So no schooling.

I questioned more.  He told me he gives to many charities:  wounded vets, disabled firefighters, deceased policemen's families, among others.

Conclusion:  Performant Recovery bought his name as an easy mark: generous, trusting, unwary, and elderly.  I know my father.  Who knows Performant Recovery?
