On Thursday, 2/9/06, a teenager came to my home selling magazines for his High School Hockey team. He said he was selling magazines to earn a trip to Europe. I bought three magazines, each with a process and handling service charge of $12.00, with a combined total of $115.00.

This young man was very personable and said that he lived down the street and he said that his mom told him to offer to wash cars and mow lawns to help with sales. He showed me his "battle" scars on his face from being hit with a hockey stick, which made his story more plausible. He even said that he'd come by after his trip and let me know how it went.

Late Friday, I decided to do a search of this company and came up with nothing. I did a search of the customer service number, 770-831-7722 and came up with many Rip-off Reports concerning this company and it's AKA name of United Family Circulation. I've called this number several times with no luck. It rings, and rings and then disconnects.

I immediately placed a stop on my check and it appears that I've only been had for the bank service charge of $6.50, a very reasonable cost for this lesson.

Pass the word to friends and neighbors; let's run these guys out of business!!!!

Steve -

I appreciate your insight and your comments are valid! I'm in the military and took a day off to catch up with some household chores, so I'm not used to visitors during the day.

I'll definitely be more cautious in the future.

#3Consumer Suggestion

If he was a high school student, why was he not in school on THURSDAY Feb 9th?

Most of these magazine sales crews are kids that have graduated High School.

However they talk so fast and are so vague, they intentionally mislead you and cause you to make assumptions.

Suggestion: put up the NO SOLICITING sign and the NO TRESPASS sign.

Or...next time ask for a name and phone # you can call for verification BEFORE you give them any money.

Many states and localities require a solicitor's permit. Ask for that too.
