The charming, confident college age student at my door followed, to the letter, the "scripts" relayed in other postings. Told me his mother walked the dog on our street. Said he is a senior at University of Miami going to Hawaii and that his parents paid for his trip, but he's helping other students raise money to go. He offered to come back and wash my cars as a bonus. Showed me checks written by my neighbors, but covered their names/address for the sake of privacy.

He was selling books, not for my enjoyment, but to be donated to charities or libraries. Keeping them wasn't an option...clever, how would I know that the charity didn't get the books in the future! He had no receipt to give me, but promised his mother would mail one in the coming days. When I asked exactly where he lived, he said in the nice house in "XYZ" neighborhood, but go vague when I pressed for details.

I wrote him a check not wanting to believe my skeptical self, but when he left I started my investigation and promply stopped payment on my check.
