Periodicals - US Magazine Service - National Magazine Exchange - LOLO Montana subscription won, watches won and entries to Strike It Rich VI Sweepstakes; bank overdrawn, refuse to cancel. Clearwater Florida
On April 4, 2008 we got hooked. Confirmation letter stating that we were officially entered in the "Super Prize" sweepstakes. Turns out that what we thought was a two year contract turned out to be in fact a four year and when we tried to cancel, they denied us saying that we were in a four year and that the companies have already been paid so we had to stay as it was.
They said that they could lower the payments and add more months (original payments: 16 months/$49.81--$3.83/week) You do the math it is all wrong. we have been paying them now since then. When they found out that we wanted to cancel because they withdrew automatically and over drew our account which is really really in the hole now, they still refused to cancel claiming that we are in a four year contract. Now we are looking at having the account shut down, and put into collections. We have paid out already $298.86 and have recieved only maybe seven or eight magazines.
The only reason I even checked into this whole ordeal was because of a prize winning scam from Singapore/Australia. I got smart on that one but not apparently the magazine deal. I dont think that there is really anything that can really be done at this point. It is in his name and they refuse to talk to me now since the last time I got irrate on the phone trying to cancel so he will try and cancel it again himself on his next day off; but like so many of the other people they have screwed so far, he works a real job during the week, thier business hours.
if there is any way that this can be fixed, could you please let us know. curiosity mainly.

Turbo you have waited a long time since April but you should still be able to get years 2, 3, and 4 refunded. NME has paid for year one but they DO NOT pay for later years until the year starts. Read the posting below and be VERY FRIM when you call. This should work.
Folks this really works for a cancelation and refund. You have worked very hard for your money so don't let these magazine sales people take it from you.
Want your money back? THIS WORKS! Call customer retention and do the following. (call 800-325-3155 or 727-524-3600 or 727-535-0205). If you get someone who isn't helping, hang up and call again.
The following data came from an employee in the customer retention dept.
We have rules. When someone threatens to call their credit card company and reverse the charge, and call the Better Business Bureau, and the Attorney General, and their lawyer, and the AUDIT BUREAU OF CIRCULATION, we CAN NOT try and 'save' the account we have to go straight to canceling the account with a full refund. If someone does make a threat and we don't cancel the account we'll get in trouble.
'I'm an employee of the national magazine exchange, I work in the Customer Service department actually called Customer RETENTION, because our job is to get the customers not to cancel their account. We get commission based on 'cancel requests' saved. We are scripted and have certain offers we have to make. First we try and spread the payments out then give them 4 years for the price of 3....and so on.
For people turned into a collection agency tell them you cancelled or that you want to cancel as above. NME uses collection agencies as a bluff but hasn't turned people over to the credit rating bureaus because they do not want the law after them. Try calling back and demanding a refund. That will work and they will leave you alone. If a collection agency calls tell them you cancelled and they will close your account. BE FIRM. In 20 years NME has never reported people to the credit rating bureaus
NME offers refunds. It's your money so demand that it be refunded. Also if you waited too long you can still cancel years 2, 3, and 4. NME does not pay for those years until the year begins. They can always cancel any later year that has not started and if the phone rep says otherwise they are lying.
