Petco Broke Promise Repeatedly, Sells rabbits! sick and dying newborns are being sold! false promises san diego California
BOYCOTT PETCO. They promised years ago that they would not sell rabbits in their stores. Brian K. Devine, Chair & CEO, stated himself that he saw there was a major issue with rabbits being sold in pet stores. he admitted that customers still purchased rabbits on a whim even after being told they were as hard to take care of as dogs.
they require vet exams and neuter and spay. they require lots of work and attention. yet people still bought the rabbits even though they were uneducated on rabbit care. they especially sell rabbits at easter time. this is the worst holiday ever to rabbits becuase people go out and buy tiny fluffy baby bunnies to put in a nice little easter basket and give to little johnny or suzy.
then when the rabbit grows up and starts spraying the furniture, the rabbit is dropped off in shelters or released outside. petco admitted this is a huge problem yet still sells rabbits!
not every employee will warn customers about rabbit cons. they only give pros. most of them ile to move the rabbits out. they say the rabbits are full grown when usually the rabbits are tiny 3-4 week old babies too young to be away from their mothers.
they also say the rabbits are pure-bred dwarfs or minilops which is also a lie. petco does not provide vet care to their small animals. not every petco sells rabbits but a lot do.

I work at my local Petco. We do not sell rabbits for those reasons listed. I do feel that it is sad that some stores do. The pet business can be ugly. There are some animals that pet stores should not sell.
It is tough to find one that does not sell any of these "bad" animals. For some, it is because they make bad pets, others are due to the fact that they are pulled out of the wild. These wild-caught animals normely do not adjust to life in captivity, and often die. In some cases it is wiping out the population of these.
I feel that it comes down to researching an animal before you buy. In my store we try to give customers the facts about the animals. If we feel that someone will not or can not give the animal the care it needs we discourage them from buying it. Often times people think we are being rude, and we loose a large sale. I, and those I work with, are far more concerned about keeping the animal healthy and happy then making the customer happy.
