I bought the DVD724 machine in Dec. 2002 at a Best Buy store in West Los Angeles, CA. I called Philips Customer Service around 9:45AM Pacific time, Fri., Feb. 27, 2004. The problem with the machine is that discs freeze, and then skip. Sometimes the disc just freezes. I turn the machine off and then remove the disc, re-insert it, and then it is fine. But then when I put in another disc, the same problem occurs, even after I clean them and the slot the disc rests on.

The Customer Service Rep said some machines malfunction. I replied this product is only 14 months old; you don't stand by your products? I told him his answer didn't satisfy me and I asked to speak to a superior.

When the superior got on the phone, he sounded suspiciously like the first person I talked with, but I didn't want to be rude and mention that unfounded accusation. He didn't give me an adequate explanation, either, as to why this machine, that I didn't use all that often, would malfunction after only 14 months. What can Philips as a company do to remedy this problem? Why should ANY product they make break down after such a short time?

Do they make them to do just that so people have to buy more produts? Do they stand by they merchandise, so the explanation that some break down while others don't leaves me the consumer with a crap shoot in terms of buying good products?
Please let me know.
Thanks.

In additon to cleaning your DVD's and CD-ROM disks frequently, you can also buy a disk which will clean the internal components of your DVD player. Costs about $10-15 and can be found at Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy and other large electornics retailers.
