Complaint Review: Piggly Wiggly

OK for starters, I reciently lost job, my car was repoed and so forth. We are living with in a rental house that my dad had that was vacant at the time, otherwise I could not even post this as we would be homeless.

For starters it is ileagal for you to buy beer, wine, andything non food releated with your food stamp ebt card. Stuff like toilet paper tooth paste also cant be bought. If a store sells that to you they can be fined into the millions of dollars and you can go to jail, not only that loose you current benifits and any future claims to benifits.  It is called fraud.

Food stamps are for folk who like me found themsleves one day with a great job, the next day getting let go due to the economy and now having to scrap to get everything we need to live on. While hopping we can get a new job. 

You can only get them for 3 years at a time, a total of 5 years lifetime.  Just like TANF.

Now if somebody would have spit on me in the grocery store, they would be on the floor picking up their teeth, and the cops would be comming.

Buying lobster with food stamps are you nuts???  You only get 400 a month for a family of 3,  thats barly enough for 3 weeks much less 4 and thats just getting meat and veggies. We dont have elegant meals on food stamps we look around at who has the best sales so we can spread it futher.

All in all I can say the original poster needs to be taking out behind the outhouse for making folks who use food stamps look like fools.  Now I think some folks engage in fraud,  but for those of us who have lost everthing sometime you need help getting back up.

It's in the Alabama Triangle which is why you can't find it on maps. I know because I spent a long week there one day waiting for a special-order muffler bearing for a '99 Lamborghini Countach to arrive. Read, comprehend, then respond. They should have taught you that in school rather than bogus geography. I also found this about the wonderful Johnstown educational system:

I, don'tagree with what peter food stamps are for people with low income jobs I don't use food stamps even though I am on social security benefits my mom works & provides food & everything I need, sense my dead beat fahter never paid his child support.


I, have to pay my share of living expenses with my social security money I qualify for food stamps I chose not to accept them cause my mother makes enough money, I did not have a fahter to work & support me I am not the only kid who is going threw this.

There's a town that's a few miles away from where I live. It's called Ash. On the sign coming into the town, it reads 'Ash, population 2' In school they told us that it's considered the smallest town in USA. It literally is one home on a corner. This town does not show up on map quest, or other of the same type of things. Yet, I know this town exists, I drive through it regularly. On addresses it shows up as Pataskala, the next town over. So Chrissy, you learn something new everyday. Just because you can't get it on map quest, doesn't mean it don't exist. The zip code would probably be that of the nearest town.

I see you have already posted on another thread from Pony Alabama (Hotty Totty). The OP was the same, but there is also a comment from someone else that lives in Pony Alabama. Yet, you still claim the town is made up. Why in the hell would 2 separate people make up a town, with the same exact city and state at that? Jodi, before you call someone a hypocrite you might want to do a little fact checking. Just because you find references to "pony, AL" on ASK.COM does not mean it exists. You could also find references to little green martians, fairies and elves. Do they exist? After all it posted on the web so it must be true - right.

Reality check time - go to google maps or expedia. Search for Pony, AL. And what do you find - NOTHING! Or if you want to see it on paper get a map of Alabama, huh it's not there either. There is no such town, so this thread sounds like a bunch of horse #%&* to me, however I want to put my 2 cents into this one for sure.
I am a hard working person, educated, single, no children, with a pretty good career, and a career I am trying to start on the side. However RICH I am not!!!
When I had cancer I was laid up for 17 months and did not work. Short Term Disability pay is a joke. I got 72.00 a month in food stamps and you better believe I bought the choicest most expensive food in the store.
I still wish I could get them legally, of course I am way over the income range now, especially since I do not have dependents, but I do feel the government likes to rip people off so therefore I have a friend that sells me food stamps for half the face value. She gets the cash she needs and I get my groceries for half price.

I cannot believe all the personal questions and attacks being thrown my way. For all of you who MUST know, I was in a tragic accident last year at the sausage factory that I own. I lost my right leg and now have to wear a wooden prosthesis. So understandably, I am unable to continue my line of work, and being exclusively trained in the sausage industry, I am not very marketable for other fields of work. I did try to operate a hot dog stand, but alas, I had difficulty standing in my booth all day long with only one good weight-bearing leg. I am currently taking a training course for a rather exciting job that I can do sitting at a desk. But, until then, I rely on food stamps to make ends meet, and the kindness of strangers to help me get through the dumpy road of life. I would appreciate a bit more compassion from those who are more fortunate, and would hope that the personal attacks and bashing will stop. How about some sympathy for an elderly disabled man ...

This is a fun thread. It's compltely bogus, but fun all the same.

Having worked as a checker in a major grocery store chain, I can say that it would be impossible for Peter to buy wine with food stamps (or EFT/Vision/Whatever they call it now) as the computer does not allow it. When you hit the total key and pay with the card, the computer automatically figures out what items are foodstamp elligible (it takes out alcohol, prepared 'hot' food, tobacco, non-food items such as cleaning supplies, etc.) and asks you to pay the rest with cash/check/credit card. Peter can claim to be a rule-breaking maverick, but unless he has the ability to hack into the Piggly Wiggly point of sale computer system and change those rule codes for food stamp items, he's not using food stamps to pay for his wine. Period. End of discussion. It's impossible.

Anyway, aside from that...

This thread does bring up an interesting debate. Although I have no evidence to back it up, I really take exception to the post saying that most military families receive food stamps. I know that some do, especially in the pay grades of E1 - E4, but once a Soldier with dependents reaches E-5 or so, he's pulling in about $33,000/year with $12,000 of that being tax free (housing and food allowences). That's more than I made as a first year high school teacher, and I had to pay for my own health insurance. The argument can be made that the majority of the military is made up of paygrades E-1 thru E-4, but at the same time the argument can also be made that the majority of those pay grades are single with no dependents, thus eat in the dining facility for free.

Anyway, when I was working in the grocery industry (a horrible 2 years of my life, but I had to get through college somehow) we used to debate on the whole food stamp thing. Having observed it first hand, my opinion is that most of the folks who get food stamps really need them. The store I worked at was frequented by lower-income individuals, and I would estimate that 96% of them used their foodstamps to carefully purchase items that would go a long way toward feeding their families (lots of hamburger, pasta, ramen noodles, etc.)

Occasionally there would be an individual who would purchase more expensive cuts of meat and seafood, but as food stamp funds were finite (I can't remember, but I think that a family received somewhere in the area of $200/month in food stamps), my thought on that was that they probably 'saved' for a while in order to afford the luxury. If the USDA is not going to limit the scope of items available with food stamps (like they do with WIC), then it's none of my business what the person buys with them, as long as he/she is not commiting fraud. If the person is fraudently receiving this benefit, however, then that's another story.

I ran into the same issues when I was in law school. You see, as a law student, it's expected that you will "entertain" every now and then.

Unfortunately, the payments on my Audi were so expensive, especially when coupled with the money I was spending on scrath-off tickets and "happy endings" in massage parlors, that I had a hard time even affording food for my family. So I HAD to get food stamps.

So then, when I would have to have a wine and cheese party, I would get dirty looks because I was buying fresh caviar and imported cheeses with food stamps. I would explain to the people "well, what am I supposed to do? I spent all of my cash benefits on the chef and dj!"

But they would still judge me.

But let's just wy that his person really did go into the Piggle Wiggly to buy "luxury" food items with their food stamps. I've ben a caseworker for over 20 years, so let me give you some facts before you go off the deep end.

1. Most people who receive Food Stamps are employed and therefore taxpeyers or living on Social Security or VA pensions and were at one time taxpayers.

2. Large numbers of military families are Food Stamp recipients. In fact, MOST of them are.

Don't be so hasty to condemn someone for buying a luxury item with their Food Stamps. There are married couples who want to celebrate an anniversary or a wife preparing a special dinner for her huband returning from Iraq that are in supermarkets today - right now - buying something special for a loved one.

Several years ago when they still had paper Food Stamps I ran into one of my clients - a disabled Nam Vet - at my local market. He and his buddies from his unit get together once a year for a barbecue and he was buying steak. Somebody in line behind me started bitching about the steak when they saw the stamps. they said that people should only be allowed to buy hamburger with Food Stamps. Even when I pointed out that steak was on sale and was actually less the hamburger, they didn't care. Even when I pointed out that he was a Vet he didn't care! Steak was just too good for the likes of someone on Food Stamps.

Please don't be like that idiot in the supermarket, and don't jump to conclusions.

Yes, I would be glad to tell you how I paired my wines. First, I selected a Zaca Mesa Viognier, to complement the honey ginger glaze for the lobster. I then selected a Sterling Vineyards Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon to bring out the flavour of the filet mignon, which was garnished with a truffled mushroom ragout. Then .. I paired a Late Harvest Riesling with my flaming fruit compote dessert. It was enjoyed lavishly by all. Thank you for asking.

Peter, how did you pair your wines? I enjoy a nice Pouilly-Fume with shellfish. I recommend Ladoucette 2003. It comes from Loire France. And the great part is, it's only about 30 bucks a bottle.

With the filet, I prefer Robert Mondavi 2001 Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon. It's about 40 bucks a bottle, but an outstanding wine for such a great price.

Since when is being generous a crime! My food stamps are for FOOD -- not for a specific type, quantity, or quality of food. I am allowed the freedom to select the food of MY CHOICE -- not the choice of taxpayers, underpaid store clerks, or jealous persons like yourselves. If I want to spend all my foodstamps in one shot, so be it -- I am given a set amount each month and how I spend it is my business. Why can't a person who receives food stamps have friends over for dinner and treat them to a nice meal? Ever think that if I spend a bit on treating my friends to a nice meal, they will then turn around and do the same for me at their expense? What goes around comes around ... my generosity to others will help me out time and time again.

People who TRULY need food stamps cannot afford to buy luxury food for their friends like you did. If you really needed the FOOD STAMPS, you would have carefully spent them on food that would benefit your family and not your guests.

Peter is absolutely full of crap on the issue of Alabama allowing wine on a Food Stamp purchase. If the store sold it to you, they broke the law.

The "Food Stamp" program is governed under FEDERAL LAW and the oversight comes from the USDA.

You cannot buy Alcohol, Tobacco, Prepared foods, or Household items.

The USDA allows states to administer the program, but does not allow any state to lower the requirements under Federal Law.

And to think, I thought I had it rough, with a severely disabled daughter under the age of 18, I make $4 dollars too much for her to get state funded medical insurance and I can't buy her insurance on my own because she is uninsurable because she is disabled. See the Cathch-22?

What difference does it make to you if I use my food stamps for an elegant dinner party, or for two weeks' worth of government cheese? I get a set amount to spend on food, and how I choose to spend that amount is really none of your business, nor does it affect you in any way. The issue at hand was how I was treated by the clerk -- not what I was buying.

Now, before anyone goes assuming. I do see the benefit to food assistance. It is needed, for the short term, in some cases. For instance, as a young child my mother was single, raising two children going to school (college) full time, and working full time and yet still needed some help. For two months, we recieved food and housing assistance. Two months. This allowed my mother to save enough money from her wages to ensure we would not need it again. Did I always have everything I wanted? No. Did I always have everything I needed? Not always. But I had a good childhood and learned that nothing comes free, or easy. Grow up, get a job and stop relying on others.
