Canadians need to beware of this scam also. I live in Ontario and received a letter stating I won $57,000.00 with a check enclosed for $3,988.95 to cover administrative taxes and clearance fees.

The contact agent in the letter was listed as Teresa Guard along with the following phone number 1-514-806-9761. The claim number was US/CA/ZDS49-00G.

I did call the number and they did NOT ask for any information such as credit card number, SIN, bank info etc. However, the person on the other end of the line was abrupt, rude and evasive on questions. Especially when I asked how can I verify that this is legit.

When performing an Internet search on Pirelli I cound not find any red flag information on that company. Only when I performed a internet search on the bank (Mellon Bank) listed on the cheque (which is very authentic looking) did I come across several reports on similar scams on Ripoff Report.

These scammers use the names of real businesses

Those businesses are not necessarily involved in this fraud.

the scammers get checks printed with real business names to make them LOOK legit only. But usually the addresses / phone numbers are not valid for the businesses at all.

No one is going to send you a check to pay your taxes with - legitimate sweepstakes are required to notify the IRS or the taxing agency for the coutnry you live in and those taxes will be taken out BEFORE you are sent any money.
