In August 2009, a young man came to our door selling security alarm systems. Since we'd already been shopping for one, we decided to let him in. He convinced me and I agreed to sign up for 3 years of service and even though it was getting late in the evening, he insisted on having it installed the same day. I agreed. My husband had gone off to work a late shift and I ended up signing the contract. We tested it when he came home and for a while all seemed well and Platinum Protection automatically withdrew money from my account each month.

In April 2010, we came home to find our back door open and wondered why the alarm never went off. Puzzled, I tested it and it went off but no one called, Twice, it went off and still no one called. At this point I was beginning to wonder if any monitoring was going on at all. I called Monitronics, their subsidiary and monitoring company and they asked me to call back during "normal working hours" since it was a Saturday. I wrote a letter terminating my contract since they didn't obviously provide the monitoring service which is the essential element they promised. And I shut down the flow of money to them.

I have received threatening letters reminding me of their contract and how their attorney would be contacting me.  My lesson learned is never to listen to any door to door salesman.
