I was looking to purchase a Yamaha generator and found this was the closest "Yamaha Pro" dealer, according to the Yamaha website. I called a day before I went in and asked them if they had one in stock. The person I talked to, Eric Thomas, said yes.

I show up on Sunday and found Eric, he confirmed the price and I told him I would like to buy it. He tells me that they are going to get it "run ready" by adding the oil and testing it before I take it home. I told him I would rather just check out and go. He insists that they do that with all the generators and it will only take 15 minutes. I agree and wander the store for 15 minutes.

When I return to his office, I notice out the corner of my eye that the display model is gone. I find Eric and ask him where it is. He says they are getting it ready for me. I tell him no, I would like a new one in the box, not an open floor model. He says "all it does is sit on the shelf, besides, that is the only one we have", a completely different story from what I heard yesterday when I called. I told him that I'm not paying MSRP for an open box floor model and tell him to cancel my order, I will go somewhere else.

Realizing he has been caught and he is losing the sale, he offers me a $50 dollar discount. We negotiate it to $75 off and I accept the deal. I tell him I want to see it run before I leave and he agrees. We head out to the service department where it is being "prepped".

I get to the service department and the first thing I notice is they gave both access panels off and the spark plug has been removed and is hanging by the spark plug wire. This is not a good sign as I know they have already been "prepping" it for 20 minutes. I looked up the first time start up procedure online and it is adding oil to the engine, moisten the air cleaner with oil and add gas.

I waited another 10 minutes and they start removing the control panel. I ask them what they were doing and was told "I'm checking the wires on the control panel to make sure they are all connected, we do this for all the new generators." My BS detector went off full blast.

I told them to call Eric, they did. I told Eric I wanted a refund, I got it (He did short me 70 cents although), I left.

The bottom line is that they would have gladly sold me a $1000 faulty generator and lied to me repeatedly to try and do it. Thank god they couldn't get it started! DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING THEY SAY, THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF WITHOUT THINKING TWICE!
