In March 2003 I discovered unknown debts on my credit reports they dated from September 2001 through June 2002. I filed a report with the Sheriff's department and communicated with the credit reporting agencies and the companies claiming payment.
All the debts on the credit report were resolved as ID theft.
In 2009 Portfolio Recovery Associates contacted me claiming I owed them $417.78, a debt purchased from US Cellular. They offered to settle it for $188.72, if I payed them within 20 days.
I called them and said, a) I never had a US Cellular phone, or any cell phone until two years ago; b) the dates corresponded with the dates of my other ID thefts; and, c) This debt never appeared on my Credit Reports from the three reporting agencies. They said they would send me a dispute letter. In the meantime, I contacted US Cellular(as I had done with the others, mostly with success) and they said it was necessary to deal with Portfolio Recovery.
The dispute letter wanted a great deal of personal information including photocopies of my driver license and my Social Security card. I am hesitant, after reading some of these reports to send them any information.
I called them again to find their email address so I could correspond without using minutes on my phone. They told me to go on their website and find their email address. There was none. This increases my susicions. The other agencies I have been involved with in settling this ID theft have been much more cooperative, even sympathetic in some cases. I just want them to leave me and my credit report alone.
I really have no beef with US Cellular, I think this is tied to my ID theft, my problem is with Portfolio Recovery Associates.
