Used Intelius to do a background. Nothing mentioned about any "membership" or third-party involvement. Authorized services were properly billed to credit card.

A few days later, another entry appeared on credit card statement. Merchant listed as: "wwwAP9*PMIdentity.com". They charged $19.95 to my credit card on 4/21 and then AGAIN on 5/21.

After contacting my CC company and filing the proper report, I did some investigating on-line.

"wwwAP9*PMIdentity.com" is listed as a company at 901 Shelby Drive in Oxon Hill, MD 20745. The Washington DC Better Business Bureau who handles that area reports no such business. That may be because the actual company name is "Privacy Matters Identity."

PMI is a subsiderary of Vertrue, Inc., 9500 W. Dodge Rd., Omaha, NE 68114, with a phone number of 402-661-2000 (this info is from the BBB in D.C.).

Evidently they say that when you used Intelius, you checked a box signing up for membership, but this is not substantiated.

I sent an email to the parent company (Vertrue, Inc) advising them of what had happened and I got an email back acknowledging they cancelled my membership (and they give you a confirmation number). They show an email address of: membersavings@privacymattersidentity.com. Might be a good place to start if you have a complaint.

Suggest whatever you do, first contact your CC company and contest the charges. I understand the merchant will not dispute, so the credit will go through pretty fast.
