California Property owners should be aware. I received a letter in the mail today from Property Tax Reassessment, A company with a PO box out of Los Angeles, CA. They are supposed to be "Property Reassessment Specialists"
They claim my property may have an over assessessed value in the amount of ($XXX). This letter had my address, property location and description, assessor # and just about all the information that comes on my tax bill. It states a service fee is due of $179.00 on 2/26/09, if not received by 2/27/09 the fee be $209.00. I was suspicious, and immediately contacted the County Assessor's Office for my counmty, because properties in my area were reassessed back in August 08 and our taxes were significantly reduced. Homeowners did not have to pay one cent to have this done. When I spoke with the County Assessor, she told me she had received a dozen or so calls this week regarding these letters and said to ignor them, as they were fraudlent. She stated they were going to run an ad in the local newspaper to let people know about this scam. The assessor's office would like to send flyers to homeowners, but do not have the funds, so they are just going to report it in the newspaper. Unfortunately, there will be some elderly people or those that do not understand and will end up sending money in thinking it is part of the County Assessor's office. This is so sad at a time when everyone is loosing jobs, homes, etc. and these people prey on innocent people taking advantage of them at a time when they think people are so desperate and will believe anything.
