In December of 2003, we put everything we owned into Public Storage in Edmonds, WA, because we were planning on moving out of state soon. In March we received a certified letter, telling us to come in and make a payment.

My husband went in the next day, and paid, and also gave them a updated telephone number. The next month, April 14, my husband went in to make a payment and retrieve our things, as it looked as if we were going to stay in WA. When he went in, the woman behind the counter told him that they had auctioned off all of our things on April 9,they didn't even call us to let us know they were going to do it! They never sent us a certified letter, nothing! And the worst part, those heartless bastards took all my beloved pictures of my deceased parents, and never returned them.

My husband asked this woman behind the counter, why didn't you call us? Why didn't you call my job? Why didn't you send us a letter? And she just looked at him. I called and I was told by John Glozer, who is the bigwig in California, that their policy is to ask these parasites to return our personal papers and pictures, and this b*****d has never returned neither.

I asked him to give me the person's name of who it was that bought our things, I would of offered the sleaze ball double of what he bought the unit for, yet he told me that their policy is not to release the parasite's name who buys your unit. If anyone had this happen to them, and did they get any satisfaction our of a lawyer, please let me know, I cry everday to have lost my pictures of my dead parents, the other things, sure, could be replaced, but the pictures were priceless to me.

WA. Lien Sale Law. This is covered by Chapter 19.150 RCW SELF-SERVICE STORAGE FACILITIES.

You should be able to get a copy from the Access WA. web site.

It is fairly easy to read and understand. If the storage opperator did not follow this I would document your situation and report it to WA AG's office ASAP. Even IF your situation resulted from a legal lien sale I.E. no pay etc. Refer to RCW 19.150.060 (5) "That any personial papers and personal effects will be retained by the owner and may be reclaimed by the occupant for a period of six months from the sale or other disposition of property "

Hope this helps and good luck. Remember, the large chain opperations will try to "blow you off" even when they foul up big time. I'm sure the WA AG's office would like to hear from you. You might think about a small claims action also.
