I got a letter telling me that I had won $68,000 in a North American Shoppers Sweepstakes. There was a real looking check for $4,985.00. I did not deposit the check as I was suspicious of it. The number on the letter 1-306-880-5196 is only answered by a machine.

Good thing I checked on internet and found the exact same scam lisited here. US Govt should extradite these scammers and prosecute them. I knew of the Nigerian Scam but getting a letter and a check from Canada is just ridiculous. I will warn all my friends and relatives about this.

If only we could use their own scam somehow to scam them in turn :-) That would be fun.

I'm glad to hear that you did not fall for this illegal scam. But why in your headline did you list Publishers Clearing House & Readers Digest if nothing in your story mentioned them? The way this scam works is the badguys steal the name and bank info of a company and then send out a counterfeit check to you. The company whose name appears on the check is an innocent victim.
