Bought a new 2000 Passat for $27,000. It has been in the shop about 18 times since we bought it. The last 8 x's has been due to a ck engine light coming on. The car started very rough when cold. We took it the first time the check engine light came on and the mechanic reset it saying it could have been a fluke. Three weeks later the check engine light came on again and they reset the light again. The third time the same. A check engine light doesn't just come on for no reason. After that we started to get mad. The next time the light came on they moved around our fuel injectors(but kept our car for 9 days). Naturally a few weeks later the light came on again. That time they kept our car for 9 days again (did provide w/ a loaner car) and changed a coil. The next time the light came on they washed the engine because they were thinking it could be a carbon buildup. 4 weeks later the light came on again & they washed the engine again. They were not trying to fix our car at all in my opinion. VW did not want to spend any money to fix our new car. Sometimes you have to spend some $ to fix a car. Isn't that what a warranty is for?Last week we traded the VW in for a Toyota. I'm still so upset at Pugi VW that I wanted my voice heard. They did not care about us!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although I can understand Carol's frustration with her engine light problem, I do not understand her characterization of our dealership as a "rip-off" and that we "abused and mistreated" her.

I cannot review Carol's file because I have no last name or VIN, but I can assure you that our service department did all that we could to repair her vehicle with the repair information we had at the time.

I have been the Service Manager at Pugi for almost 14 years. Yes, we have encountered difficult repair issues over the years. But, we always consult with VW field engineers or with the technical hotline to resolve these issues.

Carol stated Pugi did not seem to care. However, she acknowleged we gave her a loaner car to use while we were attempting to find the repair solution. I assure you we were as frustrated as she was about the repeat repair visits. I would much prefer happy customers to unhappy customers.

Most likely the coils were the cause of Carol's light issue. Two years have gone by since her concern, but VW did step up and make sure ALL affected vehicle owners were notified to have all coils replaced free of charge, with reimbursement procedures for those that had paid for coil replacements.

To Ian Hartley Melbourne Australia,

Ian your 98 V6 was not one of the effected vehicles only the 1.8T's and a very select V'6's were effected on the Audi side.
Email me at [DELETED] and have your mechanic scan the computer and report the fault codes and I will check with my service dept for possible solutions.

Best of luck.

This is not so much a response or a rebuttal but more a question directly related to Marks comment about the VW Passat engine warning light problem.
I am stuck out here in Australia with my 98 V6 Passat and have the warning light problem, local VW garage in Melbourne were also clueless about the cause of the warning light problem.

So this problem is Global and I am a mechanical engineer and I couldn't fathom it(apart from it must be electrical)so I need Mark to let me have the correct replacement part number please so I can pass it on to the garage and have this annoying (every start up)problem solved once and for all.
Best regards

VW inside information

#7Consumer Comment

Thu, May 08, 2003

I am a past VW Dealer Parts Manager and that time of year was about the same time VW of North america was having severe driveability and check engine lights coming on in their passats.

This was due to a defect forund in the ignition coils being produces for VOA and Audi, I found out during my employment that they went through 4 different degign issues before they finally got it right.

The problem was the check engine light would go on but the symptom that it called for could not be found to verify.

So during the next coming months there was a nationwide backorder on the ignition coils as there were literally thousands and thousands of VW's and Audi's experiencing the same problems.

In the defense of Pugi for not finding the issue no dealers were able to determine the problem until it beacame a huge problem, then of course VW and Audi started sending out tech bulletins outlining the problems and the fixes to take upon.

Maybe pugi could have been more sympathetic but the real problem was at design of the faulty part not on the dealer solely, i symapthize with the consumer but being on the inside was almost as bad trying to make sure we had the parts available for repair which I was the only one in the Chicagoland area to get our CSI out of the toilet due to it.
