I contacted Purpleheart Moving to get costs on a move from CA to AZ around the first week of Feb. I spoke to their Rep Bate and he gave me a verbal of $5000 for the move. He emailed me a blank form to list items to move. I filled it in and emailed it back. He called me the next day to tell me the cost to move was now $9000.

I said okay and he sent me a contract to sign and for a deposit of half the cost roughly over $4000 which I paid with a credit card. A week before we moved I contacted Purpleheart to go over the logistics of the move. I was then told the cost to move was now $14,000. I immediately cancelled the contract and sent them an email cancelling.

They emailed back confirming cancellation.  I hired another mover for $11,000. A month later, and Purple Heart will not refund my $4000 plus deposit!  They say I signed a contract. I signed a contract based on the move being $9000. I did not sign a contract on a move that was going to cost $14,000. I called my credit card company but they are unable to help.

I called Purpleheart and they laughed at me!  This company does this on a regular basis. I’ve seen reports on the web where they increase cost 70% after the contract is signed!!  This is a sham. Can you please help me get my deposit back?

Moving Deposits Are Not Refundable

#2Consumer Comment

Mon, March 25, 2019

I guess I should start by saying a website cannot get you your money back if your own credit card company won't be able to.  I mean I suppose you could try and sue for your deposit, but most of these moving contracts limit where you can sue the company for, and that's generally in Florida given where these movers are located.

I’ve seen reports on the web where they increase cost 70% after the contract is signed!!  This is a sham.  This isn't something limited to this company - you selected a scam mover that will low ball you a quote over the phone in order to get your business, and then raise your price when they present a contract for you to sign.  This happens all of the time when you as a consumer decide you are going to go online to find a mover - mostly because the movng industry is unlike any other business you as a consumer will ever have to deal with.  And yes, all of this is legal.

Think about this:  you decide you need to move.  Now, who are you going to trust your belongings to:  (a) someone you never met until that day, or (b) someone who came to your residence and saw everything needing to be moved beforehand?  Do you choose someone you trust, or someone who you find online?  Can you trust anyone you find online and never met until the day of your move?  No.  So why give all of your possessions to someone you never met or established trust with until that day?  Once you look at it this way, you will never select a mover online - ever.

Moving is not an inexpensive venture.  Going online to research the moving industry is highly recommended but deciding to choose a mover online is the worst thing you can do.  Find a mover local to you and have them come out to survey what needs to be moved.  Get 3 local movers to perform quotes for you in this way; if they refuse to come see, then refuse to consider them.  Select who you trust, not who is cheaper.
