Radioshack - Compaq Compaq Computer, Printer and Monitor $297 after rebates (1999) San Diego, California
I bought a computer package (Compaq Computer, Printer & Monitor) that was on sale for $297 after rebates. One exception is that the monitor had a small screen and I opted to buy the monitor with the larger screen (17")
It cost a few dollars more but it also had the rebates. The salesman informed me that the only monitor he had was on display. I agreed to purchase the floor model. As I went to pay for it, he asked me if I wanted to apply for a RadioShack credit card. I said no, it probably would not go thru anyway.
He said, "Let's try any way." I said, "OK". He tried, it went thru and I was set. He then picked up the monitor, unplugged it and proceeded to place it in a box. We then went thru the process of getting me a screen name and hooking me up on the internet. (It came with the computer)
I get ready to sign the paper work and I see he has me down for $800 plus on this new acct that I had just opened. I questioned this and he told me that after the rebates of ($400-computer-$275-monitor-$100-printer) my acct would show a balance of $250 plus sales tax.
I get home, start applying for the rebates and discover that he had put the monitor in wrong box. No UPC code for this item. I also discover that he had taken the $400 rebate in-store. So, I wind up with a rebate of only $100 for the printer. I went back to the store to speak with him, and lo and behold, he had been transferred to another location. I could never locate John any more.
I tried to call the acct receivables dept at RadioShack to report all this and I was informed that it was too late the acct had been set up already and I owed all this money. It was only supposed to cost $257 in total after rebates.
It took me from 1999 to 2006 to pay this off. I contacted Compaq and Compuserve and got no help from them either.
This happened in San Diego, Ca in Dec 1999.
