In my original post, I commented on how wonderful Crystal was. At that time, this was true. I purchased a puppy from her, who later came down with crippling elbow disease (DJD). Crystal gave me a "replacement" puppy at no charge and sent the original puppy back to me. However, the "replacement" puppy had several issues when she first arrived (diarrhea, worms, giardia, fungus on feet and tip of tail, severe ear infections, malnourished, etc.). She was also extremely unsocialized and would not eat. When I called Crystal, she told me that the dog wasn't that way when she put her on the plane! All further attempts to contact her were without any response.

Both of the dogs I obtained from Crystal have had several inheirited diseases and are orthopedic nightmares. Elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, etc. The "replacement" puppy has such severe hip dysplasia, I actually spent the money to have her hips evaluated and xrays submitted to OFA - the results are posted on OFA website. (WS10419101). My vet was shocked when he took first reviewed the xrays, commenting on how he has never seen something so sever - she literally had no acetabulums in her hip joints!

Crystal has continued to breed the same dogs over and over, producing dogs with diseases and medical conditions which costs the new owners a fortune or to the extent these dogs require euthanizing.

In February 2005, Crystal sold me and my friends, Koty and Greg, the most wonderful Newfoundland puppy, who they named Kaya. Crystal was a dream to work with, and we were so extremely impressed with her kennel. She let us roam as we wanted, and we saw absolutely nothing that indicated "puppy mill" or anything but a wonderful breeder with a wonderful business. My friends and I would not hesitate to buy from her again. In fact, we plan to!

Crystal is a caring breeder and the above report of poor breeding should be disregarded

One year ago I adopted an adult Saint Bernard from Crystal. Crystal originally bred this Saint and was kind enough to take him back after his adoptive owners abandoned him. He is a wonderful dog, a great friend, and in excellent health. In a few years, when I am looking for a Saint Bernard puppy, I will be contacting Crystal again. The above complaint seems like a sad attempt at extorting money from a dog breeder. Really, very low class.

My husband and I bought a Newfoundland pup from Crystal and she is a beautiful, healthy georgeous Newf.
Crystal has always answered all our questions and helped us raise our girl. She is experienced
and knows what she's talking about!
I would highly reccomend this kennel to anyone who wants to buy a Newf... she is excellent,

I bought a Saint Bernard in Jan of '02. He came in his airline crate and had his vet papers with him and everything. He was healthy as a horse and Crystal Nelson did everything she could to ensure that he was going to a good home, that he was healthy, and had even taken him with her to town b4 I bought him (imagine a breeder that would actually spend time with a puppy). I have no complaints whatsoever. I would love to buy a Newfoundland from her someday. (I'm overwhlemed with a Saint and a Grt Pyr!!!!)

Teresa, if you are going to slam purebred dogs, at least spell it right.
Not all purebred dogs are defective and not all breeders inbreed.

If you got 2 good dogs from the shelter, you were lucky, as a lot of them are there because of behavior problems or health problems.

Three times my family tried to adopt a dog from a shelter and each time the dog was a fear biter, or had serious health issues. I found out these dogs had been adopted out and returned several times!

Did I return the poor dogs again to run this gauntlet? No, I ate the costs and put them down.
I now have 4 purebred Poms and 1 purebred GSD.

I have 2 Newfoundlands, both came from Crystal. I have contracts on BOTH of them. Crystal is a responsible breeder and cares greatly about the welfare of the dogs she breeds and places...PERIOD!

Crystal honored EVERY detail in her contracts and I would (and have) recommend her to all I know. I have recommended her to one of our very good friends who has also has gotten 2 dogs from her...both the result of a very good breeding program.

If you DO NOT have a contract with her (or anyone else for that matter), you shouldn't be slandering people. Where is the OWNER regarding this supposed contract? Why can't she speak up for herself? And, why hasn't she followed what the contract entailed, i.e., submit proper vet reports, x-rays, etc. to Crystal's vet or to OFA?

My thoughts...maybe you shouldn't have a Newfoundland. Regardless of the best breedings, there are always the possibility of problems with this (or any other) breed. If you can not accept the responsibilities that go along with ownership of ANY animal...YOU SHOULD NOT OWN AN ANIMAL!

Again...I have a high regard for Crystal and I DO NOT BELIEVE your comments Greg! I have had dealings with Crystal and she has honored every single detail in her contract AND MORE!!! I will continue to recommend her to everyone!!!

I also own a Newfoundland from Rama Jama Kennels in Parker South Dakota The breeder being Crystal Nelson.

I also signed the same standard contract and have it available if you need a copy to read Greg.

Crystal has done a great job of telling the truth reguarding her contracts.

Now I am concerned about the Newfoundland that belongs to some one else other than Greg, if the owner is stuck with some one that is trying to scam Crystal to get money that doesn't belong to him I am sorry for her and her Newfie. He is not a suitable owner for a Newfoundland or any other breed, be it pure bred or Mixed breed. They all deserve to be loved and cared for. ALso according to the contract he is not the owner and has no claims to this Newfie.

Greg has never stated the exact reason why he wants to claim he has been ripped off. If you have a newfie pup with a health problem covered in the first owners contract all you have to do is have your vet talk to Crystals Vet and return the pup to Crystal and she will refund your money or replace the pup with another of equal value.
I currently own three Newfies, altogether since getting my first newfoundland I have had six Newfoundlands. I can tell you that breeding Newfoundlands is not a money making adventure.
It often ends up costing more to breed a litter than you gain money wise. Breeders are always trying to improve the breed and it is a lot of work that is one reason I don't breed myself. I leave that to the experts like Crystal.

You really need to say your are sorry and leave it be, love the Newfoundland you are referring to or give the Newfoundland back to the breeder as stated in the contract.

we do infact quarantee a happy heathy puppy

#11REBUTTAL Owner of company

Tue, November 18, 2003

I am commenting on the complaint that was made about me. We do have a written contract, and we do infact quarantee a happy heathy puppy. The only person that has breached the contract is a person by the name of GREG! The person that has filed this report against me. I have never sold a puppy to anyone by the name of GREG, who lives in IN. I did however sell a puppy to a very nice lady by name of Becky Baxter. Its my understanding that Greg is her watchdog? boyfriend? Husband? The last I heard from Becky, she was thrilled with her puppy! I did however get a nasty, threatening, phone call from a Greg, demanding money back for some dog that he says has a heart condition (SAS)and he says it came from me. In such a case, if a problem would arrise with pup purchased from me, proper procedure must be followed as stated in the contract! Never was there any mention of any sort of hip/elbow problem with the dog.

1. As stated in the contract, the cardiac report or xrays (for hip and elbows) must be sent to my vet or the ofa for verification. This was never done!! I did however get a 1 page statement from GREG, that some dog had a heart problem. I have no idea if it was infact the pup purchased from me.

2. As stated in the purchase contract, the dog much be properly identified by its AKC number. This was also never done. The info must also be sent by the attending Vet, to my vet or the OFA.THIS ALSO WAS NEVER DONE!!

3. As stated in the purchase contract, the dog must be owned my the ORIGINAL owner, NAMED, on the purchase contract. I have no contract with the name GREG on it!!!

3. As stated in the purchase contract, in big capital letters. Under no condition will any replacement or refund be given till the dog is returned to the breeder. GREG told me that was not an option. Whats up GREG??? can you not read??? The only person that has not kept the contract is GREG!!

With this in mind, I was still nice enough to tell him, he could infact keep the dog as a pet. When our puppies are purchased as a pet/companion they are purchased as reduced price, to cover spay and neuter procedures. I told GREG I would refund this difference. Once again my vet did not get verification of the spay procedure. I just get a phone call demanding money. Sorry GREG....there will be no money coming as you have not kept the contract. You have breached the contract in several instances. READ it.....read it 10 times if you have to. What part do you not understand?? For you to make a post as you did really shows how ignorant you are! What breeder would send money to a person that did not purchase the puppy? You also say I sell unhealthy dogs? If thats the case, my vet and I would like to see the report for that also!! As stated in the purchase agreement, the pup was to be checked within 5 days of purchase. Lets see that report!!
The fact is we do in fact have healthy puppies. My vet would never sign a internation heath cert. on a sick dog!! Nor would I ever place a puppy that was ill!

All our dogs go through extensive health screening prior to breeding. We also breed to the AKC written standard, and have very well bred dogs, with outstanding pedigrees. I have been owning, loving, and breeding dogs for 17 years!! Our puppies are also go though 2 complete physicals prior to leaving and very healthy and happy. Its novice people like GREG, that give the breed a bad name.

GREG'S other comment really puts the frosting on the cake!!!!.....the comment about people who breed and sell dogs for money!! I do not of any breeder of Newfoundlands that give their puppies away for free!!! Greg?? are you wanting a free newfoundland? Your a joke!! good luck finding one.
You also threatened me with a lawyer...what happened to that idea?? I am waiting!!!
I would have to call this Slander!! Wouldn't you GREG???

#11Consumer Suggestion

Wed, October 29, 2003

An easy solution..

Most pure bread dogs have problems either emotionally/psychologically/behaviorally or physically. This is because they are usually inbreed and the dogs are not well taken care of. My suggestion to you is this: go to the humane society or other shelter. If you really have your heart set on a specific breed, you can contact the rescue group for that particular breed. There are so many unwanted animals that are killed every day. It is simply irresponsible to purposely bring more puppies into the world when there are so many without homes already. This practice will only stop when people stop paying for pets. By the way, I have three very sweet dogs, two from the humane society and one who I found as a stray. They are the most wonderful dogs in the world. I cant understand why their original owners would ever want to give then up. Truly their loss! Im sure you can find what you are looking for at the humane society.
