I purchased a version of real player for $20. What I thought was a one time fee. In the process I used my credit card to purchase the product online. I have received 2 monthly 9.95 charges as well and have not purchased any monthly service.

You cannot un-subscribe from the service online that I can find. I called the number to unsubscribe and was put on hold for 30 minutes. At that point, a receptionist picked up and said he would have to take my name and number to be contacted. I don't have time to waste calling a company like this to cancel something I didn't purchase. I insisted on holding for someone and he said that was not an option. He could not tell me when someone would get back in touch with me. He basically blew me off and gave no options.

Non-authorized billing, bad customer support, poor customer relations.

How to avoid getting ripped of by Real

#3Consumer Suggestion

Don't download their junk in the first place. I noticed this outfit was shady years ago. I was test installing their software, and noticed that, unless you scroll down during the install phase and notice the check-ed on boxes for stuff you probably do not want (newsletters and the like). The options that you can see by default are not checked.... you have to scroll down to see the checked options - as if they KNEW they were hiding stuff from most users who would breeze through the screen and not notice. Ever since then (and that was 1999), I have avoided any RealAudio product like the plague. It does not suprise me in the least that Real would be very, very aggressive about getting people on subscriptions - even without their consent.

No problems dealing with RealPlayer

I bought Realplayer online. I had problems getting it to work on my system, and decided that I didn't want it after all.

I called the customer service number (with very little hold time) and explained my problem. The service rep was courteous, efficient, and respectful. While she did give me the soft sell and tried to work with me, she gave me no problems about refunding my money when I told her that I just didn't want it. Although I can't remember her name to commend her personally, I'll have to settle for commending their customer service department in general.
