RPM has been calling constantly for 2 weeks. they call as early as 8 AM and late into the night. They requested information on my deceased grandmother and said they require a death certificate, however they will not give me any information why they need it. They claiM "It's a private business matter." I am POA on her estate and am authorized to handle any activity. She has been deceased almost 10 yrs. I am afraid to send them any paperwork. She NEVER had a debt in her life. Didn't even own a credit card.

I am not sure if I can provide any real info here, but I did work for this company out of Bothell, WA for a couple of months. During training we were expected to learn the "ins and outs" of collecting debts. There was a commission based off of how many payments you were able to receive and how much there were. One of the things I was "taught" by a seasoned veteren was too spend as much time on the answering machine as possible and just be silent. This made it look like you were connected to a call for longer than if you just left a quick message and hung up. We had to make so many calls and have so many contacts to be eligable for the commission.

I was never informed of any legalities on how we could collect debt, just basically whatever it took to get information or more importantly, MONEY. Let's just say this didn't work out for me, I not too thrilled about the idea of calling these people and ruining their day. While I understand it is important for people to be responsible and take care of their debts, I also have compassion for people that have made mistakes. I just think about how I would feel on the other side of the phone, I'd be more likely to make payments if I was treated nicely and not "harrassed". I realize we needed to call people to collect, but really is it going to do any good to call them every hour? No.

I smell a scam.

Tell them to stop calling and hang up. End of discussion. Each time, every time. Give them nothing else except your clear instruction to STOP CALLING. Maybe in time they'll realize they're getting nowhere with you and they'll give up.

But most importantly: give them NO information than what they already have. Don't discuss the issue with them. Nothing. Give them nothing. Simply hang up.

I received a similar "It's a private business matter" several months ago when one of these guys called (and it's quite obvious they were calling from overseas) my number asking for my mother.

I live in an entirely different state than my mother, who has an unlisted number. I do not. Obviously I was easier for them to get in contact with. During the first call, I simply told them I was not the person they were looking for but that I'd pass along their message.

They called back several days later and, in an effort to stop the calls, I said I was my own mother so I could get to the root of these calls. The issue?

They were attempting to collect on a TWENTY-ONE YEAR OLD DEBT. I laughed and said, "Do what you have to do. Sue me. Garnish my wages. Show up at my house. But stop calling. Got that? STOP CALLING THIS NUMBER!" *slam*

Haven't heard a peep out of 'em since.
