Red Roof Inn's are telling you that you can upgrade your reservation to include a GAS CARD for an additional 10.00, what they don't tell you is that will be taxed at the hotel tax rate upwards of 15% costing you 11.50 or the 10.00 gas card.  When you redeem the card at the gas station, you will pay tax on the gas you purchase, thus making the card worth only 7 or 8 bucks when it's all said and done.  I stayed in Chicago, was not even aware that I was paying for a gas card, said it was included in the rate...it was not....their was an upharge of 10.00 with hotel tax of 15%, in addition they would not give me the card until I checked out, forcing me to come to the desk...thus leaving me thinking of how many people do not pick up their card.  When I went to the out of the way Speedway to redeem the card I only got 1.3 gallons of gas.....this is truly a rip off and someone is hiding something.

A Typical American Hotel Problem. Yes. For you this is theft !

This is a typical hotel ploy in the USA. Stick the customer with some hidden, additional, or other fees and then expect them to come back later to get the money back.

I see this all the time and it also includes sleight of hand and other double talk and nonsense by staff hoping to steal money from you. Usually it is done for extended stays and the want to take and refund transient taxes on the rentals. This one is odd for sure. I'd avoid these people in total if for no other reason than this card game and trick. Thanks for sharing that!

I was waiting to check into another Red Roof Inn and was sitting at a picnic table before my room was ready. I was watching the local wather authority park their air compressor leaving the draw bar up in the air, as they did other work on a water pipe. A person came past in a minivan and drove into the draw bar crashing it through their windshield and breaking the side glass windows on their van. The fault of the water workers and van driver for sure.

As I checked in later that day the woman at the front desk explained that this was MY FAULT !

True !
