On the morning of Saturday, November 19, 2011, I was on my cell phone speaking to a friend when my when a call came in on my land line and went to my answering services. A message was left on my land line instructing us to call the number regarding a debt. I was shocked by the telephone call as I was not aware that I owed anyone any money to have a debt collection agency calling me. I immediately called the number. A male answered and identified himself as Chris. I asked for his last name and told him that I was calling because I had received a message about a debt. I gave him my telephone number. He told me that the call was to collect a debt from "X" (X is my husband's name). I asked what the debt was for. He said he couldn't tell me and wanted to know if "X" was here. I said I am "X's spouse. He said "oh ok.' Are you living at 741 Fenimore Street." I said what? What is that? He said is does your husband's last four of his social security number "XXXX" I said "no." I said how did you get my number? He refused to say. I then demanded to speak to his supervisor. Someone came on the line who identified himself as "Mr. Buckner" I asked for a first name. I told him that I had received this call which I believe is harassment. Asked how did he get my telephone number because the information he had clearly didn't apply to my husband. He said the debtor usually provide the number to the creditor. I said I doubt that very much, since the "X" you are looking for couldn't give you my telephone number. I asked for the creditor's name so that I could contact them. He said he was prohibited by law from giving me that information. I told him I was not an idiot that I knew they went through the phone book or other information and look for names and numbers similar to "X" name and called those individuals. I told him that that practice was unscrupulous and that I would report them to the authorities. These people are predators who harassed people in trying to find their debtors. There should be a law to stop them from doing so.
