Earlier this year, I finished up beauty school and obtained my cosmetologist license. Eager just like any brand new stylist to get their first job in a salon, I saw that Regis was hiring. My best friend and I used to get our hair done there all the time and I was excited to see that my favorite stylist was now the manager.

Getting hired was easy--I got the job right away. Now, here's where I messed up: I didn't ask if they would provide training. But since the manager KNEW that I was fresh out of school, I figured that I would be working next to her, learning everything I need to know.

Boy, did I think wrong. From day one I was thrown into the snake pit. For someone who's fresh out of school (stylists don't learn much in school other than the bare basics and how to pass the licensing exam), it was extremely overwhelming and downright scary. I messed up quite a few times, resulting in multiple complaints from the clients and me getting scolded on a daily basis.

While the management tried to tell me where I went wrong in what area, it didn't really help. I still wasn't getting the training and the help I needed. I knew that I was on my own and knew I would have to learn only from my mistakes and from trial and error. Pretty soon, my motivation was to just show up and not mess anything up. After three weeks of this, I was let go because the constant messing up was "ruining Regis' reputation". It could have been avoided if I had a little help and training.

My advice to any student or anyone just getting out of school is to MAKE SURE that any salon you apply at offers training. No Regis salon will do this because all they care about is making money, and any time taken to help a new stylist will take away from profiting. The company is B.S.
