The online system at www.reservationcounter.com let me "cancel" my hotel because I was too sick to travel. After I cancelled, it said my credit card had already been charged because it was too late to cancel.  I called Reservation Counter customer service, and they confirmed the online system should not have let me cancel because it was too late to cancel.

I said "fine," and asked them to undo my cancellation so that another family member could use the room.  After a long hold they informed me that I could not longer use the room because I cancelled it online, but that my credit card would still be charged for the room.  I said, "So, you are telling me I have to pay for a room that you will not let me use?"  "I'm afraid so, they said."  Idiots.  If it was too late to cancel, then their online system should not have let me cancel.
