i had and account with fingerhut over 5 years ago, well in 2001 i get a letter from some law office in new york(mitchell kay) stating i should direct all payments to them. since i was trying to clear up my credit at the time, i accepted the settlement offer from mitchell kay. well they were nice enough to send me a letter stating the acct had been cleared up and i now had a zero bal as of feb 2002 after i made my payment. keep in mind i had not received any correspondence, bill, notices, etc from fingerhut prior to the letter from mitchell kay in 2001, so imagine my surprise when i receive that letter.

anyway, moving on to may 2002, i received another letter from mitchell kay's office stating i still owed another balance of 179.00, with a totally different acct number. this is where i got confised because i knew i had paid them off in feb, well it turns out fingerhut had another account under my name which i knew nothing about until may 2002. like i said before i was in the process of cleaning up my credit; i had been checking my credit report periodically (once every 6 mths)since 1999 and none of them had either one of the accts from fingerhut on them.

i don't understand why the company waited so long to contact me concerning the accts if they were valid debts owed. i don't have a problem paying who i owe but at least let me know before sending me to a collection agency. a simple statement would've been nice. if i'm not mistaken, i had an acct with fingerhut at least 9 years ago,so why did it take them 8 years to contact me about these accts. and to this day i still have not received anymore letters, notices, etc from rjm acquisitions or fingerhut--all i received was a delinquent collection entry on my credit report!!!

something needs to be done about these companies ASAP!!!! it's not fair to the consumers!!!! if a person purchases something from you on credit, the least the company can do is send a bill or something!!! give the person a chance to pay you before you send them to a collection agency..and the workers for these agencies are very rude,so when you finally contact them about the accts they automatically assume you don't want to pay the debt even when you weren't aware of anything owed!!!!
