Complaint Review: Rocket Steel Buildings

I am located in Victoria. I needed a new building for my RV and 4 x 4.

When I was doing my research I ran accross an arch style Steel Building from Rocket Steel or Centuria Steel Corp or Aztec Steel. I was dealing through a dealer in Ontario.

After giving them a deposit of $2,100 and recieving my so called engineered drawings I found out that we could not construct the building at my home. We have a small revine in the backyard and it was a conservation issue. When I asked Rocket Steel for my deposit back they laughed. "Deposits are non refundable" The sales rep was not so helpful after he had my money.

Since I've been doing so much research on the company.I see hundreds of sites recommending them  but all of those sites are controlled by Rocket. Their internet presence is enormous. They have 1600 links back to their websites reported. Such a huge internet presence but no real Customers that I can find.

Looking at the contract closer, you deal with Rocket Steel Buildings, but the contract is actually with Centuria Steel Corp. The contract fine print was impossible to read.

They have no records with the BBB. I discovered from another site that Rocket Steel was incorporated only last year. Their office is located in Philadelphia but the Pennsylvania Dept of State reported they have no address of record on file from them.  A Lawyer name of David W. Engstrom filed their trademarks, but Mr. Engstrom will not return my messages and the law firm where he worked, they report he is no longer working there.

If I was purchasing a building again I would have never buy from Rocket or an american company. There is nothing I can do and they know it. If your Canadian buy Canadian!

Centuria Rocket Steel Buildings is Not a Rip-Off!

After reading the reports against Rocket Steel Buildings, I felt it necessary to respond because of my positive experience!!  Yes, this building company is out to sell buildings.  I've been in sales all of my life, and sales are made because of a "sense of urgency,"  a good deal 'now' vs later; and most companies will work with you about delivery, payment, etc., rather than refund because you have already signed and agreed to a contract purchase.  You cannot blame the company for "putting pressure on you to buy," if you purchased one, then you allowed for the sale to take place.  Every one has the right to say NO!

I bought two buildings from Centuria Rocket Steel Buildings.  I bought an out-building 60' x 50' x 22' and a garage 22' x 36' x 16'.  I had a Qonset building go up in fire last January.  I took that claim and bought two buildings with it.  I am in no hurry to put them up because of lack of funds.... they knew that I wanted a late delivery.  I called and told them that we were in a wet season and wanted more time, and they gave me a few more months!

The company called me several times in the beginning, ad asked me if I wanted another smaller building that they had on sale, and I responded yes!  They wanted more downpayment.  I told them since I gave them more down on the first building than they required, they could take part of that money as the down payment on the second, and they agreed.  The people that work for this company are super professional, know what their doing and deliver what they say they will.

The delivery came on time, and I was notified well in advance.  The driver did a superb job of putting the buildings inside another out-building.  The deal I got on these buildings is beyond any other discounted building out there.  To get these two buildings for $26,000 is unheard of.  I will have to buy the overhead doors, walk in door and concrete, but I have a good start to increase the value of the property!

Yes, they did call me and up-sell me.... yes, they had someone "back out of a deal," and thought of me (sales gimmick with urgency).... and I'm darn glad they did!  I got exactly what I wanted!

Don't sign a contract if you're not ready to buy.  That's just being young and not mature enough to make promises you can't keep.  Why would any one commit to anything without the sale of the property with 2 mortgages, and no money to buy?  and scrape up a down payment, only to want to cancel and then want their money back.  Seriously, this isn't the company's fault, and it certainly isn't fraud!

Now, I feel better!

To support the complaint, I too contacted RSB USA and requested a quote.  After speaking with the represenative multiple times and agreeing in principle to the design and cost, I requested a written quote either via e-mail or a PDF.  At which point I was accused of being a contractor, was told I would be banned from their web site and never do any business with them.   I explained i was not a contractor but after being in business for myself for over 30 years I wanted to compare quotes.  After the above insulting commentary by the represenative, and after he kept dropping the price I was totally put off by this company.

Rocketsteel has resolved my issue

I was called to day with an apology from Rocketsteel and they have given me almost half of my deposit back.  I just want to say that Rocketsteel does stand behind their product and will make an effort to assist their customers with any issues that may arise.  As far as I'm concerned, my dispute has been resolved.

Thanks again for helping me out.

Rocket Steel Buildings has a great reputation - check us out this positive feedback posted today to our FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/RocketSteelBuildings.

"We are in the early stages of discussion with Mr. Williams & Rocket steel concerning their buildings. We became aware of both from neighbours in our area, many of whom have been satisifed with their building & the purchase process. During our inquiries, we were told that we would receive engineered drawings & they will show all components that are included. I would highly recommend both Williams & Rocket Steel to anyone considering a building.

Sincerely,

Linda

I have also been scammed

I bought a small acreage last year in BC and was looking at having a pole bard setup.
I happened to find Rocket Steel (said they were Canadian) and decided to give them a call.
I got a call back from Mike Porter - down in the USA.
First question I asked was - how come I didn't get called from your Canadian office?
Was told everything is arranged from the USA.
The building I was looking at was too expensive, plus I was waiting for our house in Alberta to sell (which it still hasn't).
He called a few days later and told me he had a building cancellation that was discounted because the deposit was already collected from the previous consumer.
So I said again, my house wasn't sold but he persisted to say he would give me a great deal and said that my house would sell before I had to pay the rest of the building.

Total cost for the building that he was offering was $19,000 something...
He then said I needed to put a deposit to "hold" it.
I said...well...how much?  He said their policy was 25%.
I said ouch - sorry, I don't have that much right now...
He said they would take Visa/Mastercard.
Yes...I should have just dropped it...
Instead..I arranged to pay these guys $5000 off of my Mastercard...

After a month I was contacted for delivery - was told that I have to arrange to unload this steel building - say what?
I said I can't as my house in Alberta hasn't sold - so I have no money...
They called again 2 weeks later...it was at that point I wanted to cancel the deal.
Mike told me that I will lose the deposit as it is needed to cover the cost of engineering and the building...I said...but, you already paid for that from the so called consumer that cancelled this order already.
No comment.  Said he will talk to his boss.
No answer...
So I inquiry again - and say, look, I am in financial hardship, paying 2 mortgages...can you guys give me my deposit back?  I even asked if they would meet me halfway and give me $2500.

------------

"Hi Geoff,

I apologize for the late response, I was out of the office last
week.  I have discussed your situation with my manager and due to company
policy we cannot offer you a refund however we are willing to delay delivery on
your building until your financially ready to take delivery. We are also in a
position to offer you a less expensive building in order to make things easier
for you. Please advise."
---------------------

My response to which I have received no reply:

The only thing I really want is
a refund.

I feel now that I was pressured
into this purchase.

I was told that the building was
discounted already (the other party's deposit).

If that's really was true, then
I fail to see why Rocket Steel needs to keep all of my deposit.

Unless you have a building that
is equal to what I've paid so far, then I'm not interested in getting a
building from Rocket Steel at all.

When I do have enough money - I
will spend it on a company that cares more about their customers and has better
business practices..

I am not happy with the current
decision at all.  To be perfectly honest - I feel like I was scammed.

Oh...as far as those drawings?  They are not new...they are like from 2003, they spent no money other than $5 to mail them to me....

I would like to first say that nobody at our company would laugh at someone regarding refunding a deposit. We take customer service very seriously.

The conservation issue is a set back that deals with your city, and has nothing to do with us as a company. When reporting to a county especially in the U.S. you rarely run into these issues, but when reporting to a city you have specific set backs that have to be checked before purchasing a steel building. This is not our fault whatsoever. The building more than meets and exceeds every requirement. The problem is with the property.

The deposit pays for services rendered for engineering, and is a standard practice with "every" steel building company you would purchase from. It also states that it is the customer's responsibility to check with the town or city. We apologize that you did not do that before your purchase, but it clearly states this was your responsibility. It clearly states in 3 different spots on the invoice that the deposits are "non refundable", and has to be signed and sent back by the customer.

We understand you frustration with your cities codes, but we in no way have we misled you. Once you have your setbacks taken care of the deposit can be used for your purchase as per your contract. What is your order number?

Marty
