I had intended a nice family getaway at Swartswood State Park. The primary attraction is the lake and prospective fishing. My husband and brother in law had already arranged for two boat rentals, both paid deposits.

My parents drove up to visit, resulting in my need to rent a third boat. I went to the docks where "Row Your Boat Rentals" was being run by two teenage girls and one teenage boy. Mind you this is on state park property. The fee was $26 for a day plus a $10 deposit. I handed the girl $40, she then dropped the cash box on the floor.

While she picked up the money her co-worker had me sign all legal documentation waiving rights, etc. I helped my mom and sister on with their life jackets. In my rush to meet up with my husband and father in the other two boats I forgot that the girl had neglected to give me my $4 change, fine my fault. Upon returning I handed my receipt and asked that they count the cash box at the end of the day and if they come up four dollars over to let me know.

The worse was when the kid took my receipt and refused to give me my $10 deposit because the girl never wrote it down (of course not she was picking change up off the floor). My husband asked if they always take deposits and the boy said yes that was policy but that the girl wouldn't let him. Again I tried to be nice about it and tried to leave my name and campsite number. The boy scribbled the number on the piece of paper, never returned my receipt and walked away.

I tried going to the ranger's office and they said they could not help because it was not their busines.. So now I was out $14 and nobody cared, their was no legal responsible adult to listen.

I just realized that this report was filed  in August 2002 - We did not own this business at that time - We purchased it in 2007 - however, we would still be happy to settle up with you since our name and reputation matters to us.

Please email me at sandford@embarqmail.com

Thanks again,

Dear Amy,

I am very sorry to hear this news - I am a bit confused because we do not take deposits on boats and our daily fee is $45 per rowboat - possibly it was an hourly fee $15. per boat.  Perhaps you rented a kayak or canoe?  Regardless, I would be happy to refund your money to you however, I would need more information.  I will of course discuss this with our staff - we have never had a complaint in five years of business and I am not happy that we should even have one unsatisfied customer.  What date were you actually at the park?   Also, I am very surprised that the Ranger did not tell us that there was a complaint - they are a great group and usually keep us abreast of campers' situations.  We could have settled this prior to you leaving the park.

Please email me at sandford@embarqmail.com and I will be happy to settle this matter.

Thank you,
R Sandford
