February 14, 2005

This day was supposed to be a pleasant moving from Arlington to Springfield a distance of no more than 11 miles.

The end of January/beginning of February I registered with a web site called 123movers.com to get estimates from moving companies in the area for my move. The response was overwhelming by phone and email. After corresponding with a few I decided to go with Bob from Ryders Van Lines. He was salesman and seemed to be very concerned with my move and gave me a great deal. I asked him several questions regarding his company, such as how long in business, are you licensed, bonded and insured, full time experienced employees, etc. He told me they have been in business for a few years, all their employees are full time and experienced no day laborers and the job supervisors had a minimum of 2 years with the company. I then asked him when he wanted to come out and see my place? He said we don't need to do that, we do it all over the phone and go room by room. He also said that most companies do everything over the phone and send no one to the customers' houses. He said what we need to do is go room by room in your two bedroom house. I told him the furniture and I was going to pack my own boxes. We were very detailed in the analysis. He made a list and determined that I needed 3 guys and a truck and a total of 5 hours. The rate was $69.00/hour which came out to be $414.00. He emailed the estimated quote to me to review and I signed and faxed it back.

The day of the move the 3 guys arrive and through Q&A I learned the job supervisor, Alone (immigrant) had been with the company for only 8 months and the other two guys spoke no English were probably day laborers. They only spoke Spanish and the supervisor new virtually no Spanish and English was his second language. I was not happy because of what guarantee Bob gave me and its hard for me to communicate with them.

They began to move stuff to the truck and Alone, sat me down and told me that in order for them to carry my stuff down the stairs to the truck the company required $225.00 to be paid in cash. I asked for a receipt, he said no receipt. However, Alone said he would cut me a break and only charge me $150.00 cash for him and his crew. I said no, does Bob know about this he said oh yes!

I started to call when he grabbed one of his two phones and said he was calling his supervisor. So I hung up and he began speaking a foreign language to the person on the other end. He handed that phone over to me and the woman said that is company policy. I explained Bob said nothing of the sort and I asked to speak to him and she said he was busy. I handed the phone back to Alone they again spoke a foreign language and he said to me I don't have to pay.

I have a feeling he called his wife, because it did not sound like a business environment and his supervisors are two men named Guy Moshen and Rami Segal (president). I called a friend of mine to come over and watch them with me because I did not trust them.
The truck was eventually loaded after a long 5 hours.

I could not believe how long they took. We arrived in Springfield and before they would unload they said I must pay in full before they unload. So, Alone came up with a figure of $812.50. I could not believe it. They doubled the estimated quote Bob gave me. I called Bob and explained the situation to him and all he told me was that he is just a salesman and he was not getting involved. I asked to speak to the supervisor and Alone called him, so I explained to him the problem and he said I have to pay.

I could not believe it. I signed the payment under duress because I wanted my stuff unloaded. I also told Bob and Rami Segal (president) of Alone's cash adventures, they said that sounded like "monkey business" and they would investigate the entire matter. They broke some lamps, damaged the floors in my old place, broke my dvd player, got mud all over my professionally cleaned carpet, and overcharged me, etc.
I called Rami on several occasions and told him how disappointed I was with his company, he said he was still investigating it.

His office called me yesterday (2-28-05) to inform me that they were crediting $100.00 back to my account for charging for moving pads. That is unacceptable. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, my county government consumer protection division, my credit card company, and am in the process of contacting the VA States Attorney's office as well as INS because of what I suspect them of using illegal immigrants.

several inaccuracies that he has written. Mr. Segal was not present on the day of the move nor was involved until after the problems had occurred.

I have read the response from Mr. Rami Segal regarding my move on February 14, 2005. I do appreciate his response and want to point out several inaccuracies that he has written. Mr. Segal was not present on the day of the move nor was involved until after the problems had occurred. Bob, the salesman, and I went over the move on a very detailed piece by piece account and determined that the move would require three guys and a truck and would approximately take 5 hours plus an additional hour that they put in to drive from their headquarters and back after the completion. Bob was made well aware of all items in my condo to be moved as well as the stairs involved. He did a thorough job of probing me for these details, as I am sure he was trained to do so. That is why he had quoted that amount of time to move me in 5 hours as recorded. I also requested employees that had a strong command of the English language as I wanted to communicate with them. I also requested seasoned employees, no part timers or day laborers. He informed me that each foreman has been with the company for 3 years and all are full time employees. The foreman knew English as a second language and spoke in his native tongue when conversing with Mr. Segal and other office personnel. This was very unprofessional. Also, the two other employees spoke only Spanish. Their foreman knew very little Spanish. The foreman could not communicate very well with his crew which produced delays. Mr. Segal points out long walkways, there were no long walk ways. Mr. Segal fails to admit that his foreman, Alone, solicited me for $225.00 to be paid in cash. However, Alone said he would cut me a break and only charge me $150.00 cash for him and his crew that he said would be his tip. Mr. Segal is incorrect again as I never gave his foreman a tip nor offered him a tip. I did make him and Bob aware of this and they said they would investigate.

Mr. Segal is correct that I did complain about the time that it took to move me 11 miles. As far as the weather conditions of that day, there was no ice nor was it slippery. According to a certified consulting meteorologist from AccuWeather, the high for that day was 50 degrees and the low was 35 degrees. Well above the freezing mark to cancel out icy conditions. Also, the stairs up to unit 2B are inside the garden-style apartment. Bob, their salesman, knew of the stairs as he did a brilliant job in probing me as I am sure all his sales people do when they move clients, getting all those important details to give the best estimate as Bob did. Now, I am sure Mr. Segal trains his employees to ask all those questions as Bob knew I lived on the second floor in apartment 2B as my address is indicated on their order of service sheet dated 02/02/2005. As Mr. Segal states I was not commutable, which was due to the fact 2 of his crew spoke no English and his foreman had difficulty speaking Spanish and English was his second language. Mr. Segal is wrong in why my friend was there, I needed extra eyes because of the incident in the unprofessional solicitation of monies.

Mr. Segal again is incorrect in who carried what out to my friends car. I was the one who carried two items out to her car and no one else did. As a matter of fact I carried multiple items out to the truck. Mr. Segal states that my friend was interfering with the crews' work making harassing sexual remarks. Again, Mr. Segal is incorrect in his accusations. My friend is a very professional woman who would never act in such a manner as Mr. Segal has stated. These are very strong accusations on a prominent woman in the community. I feel Mr. Segal is being very unprofessional by making false accusations to destroy her character. Mr. Segal should be ashamed of himself by attacking her. Again, I must point out Mr. Segal was not present on the day of the move.

Mr. Segal is correct that I was concerned about his employees tracking mud in my new house. Any professional company would be concerned too. They did put down some blankets to prevent the tracking of mud. However, they did get mud on my carpet which was professionally cleaned three days before. Mr. Segal fails to state that his foreman inadvertently charged me for moving pads they used to wrap some furniture during the 11 mile trip. I brought it to his attention that being charged $10 per pad was a lot of money for an 11 mile trip. He informed me that he only charges customers for moving pads when they are for longer trips. Therefore, he said he was going to credit back my account which he did do.

Mr. Segal states that when these liabilities came up, the foreman requested me to sign a release form to discharge them from any claims. This is true, but what Mr. Segal fails to further state is that he instructs his employees not to unload any items from his truck to the new location unless the customer signs these documents as well as the bill. I was on the phone then with Ryders as I thought his foreman was strong arming me. His foreman said sign and we will unload your items, if you don't sign we will sit and the hours will increase. I signed all documents under protest, but was informed if I write under protest he would have to write up new forms.

Mr. Segal is correct I did file a claim with the insurance company for Ryders, which is still being reviewed.

I am deeply offended by Mr. Segal's written remarks of brandishing me a racist and a violent person. His unprofessional attacks on me and my friend are very personal and inappropriate. Mr. Segal should know I am a very respectful person and held in the highest regards in my community.

I do appreciate your time and concern in reviewing this matter more closely. We need to rectify this situation so Mr. Segal, Ryders Van Lines and I can move on.
