Complaint Review: Sam's Club

Sam's Club Member purchasing gift for Non-Member and their return policy Johnstown Pennsylvania

For Christmas I purchased a gift through Sam's Club (internet) and had it shipped to Pennsylvania. The recipient of the gift already had this partcicular item so they took it to the nearest Sam's Club to exchange it for another item.

In the process of their exchange, they were then told that they would have to pay a 15% surcharge because they were not members of the club.

I believe this exchange should have been through my membership as they had all the information - wouldn't that be common sense?

The gift recipient refused to pay the 15% and took a Walmart gift card instead. Very embarassing on my end.....

I will never buy a long distance gift from them again unless I can exchange it myself.

I actually agree with L.  I received sheet pans as a wedding gift from Sam's Club.  I do not have a membership there and need to take them back.  I think it is unfair to get charged an amount just because you're not a member.  If I wanted to go in there and buy something, I would completely understand the charge.  Since the item was purchased from a member, the item should be returned as if it were that member.  Even though the charge is small, it feels like a cheap jab.  I'm sure, like L, the member didn't realize the annoyance it is to return something here.  If this is Sam's Club's policy, they need to let people know.

Sam's Club IS a 'membership' buying club....

so I am not surprised that the member would have to obtain the exchange. Likewise, you can only have two people on one account if those two people live at the same address. So I could not add my daughter, because my wife is always with me meaning only one of us 'really' needs to belong.

Of course if the item were say $300 the recipiant could have joined for $40 instead of paying the $45 for the 15% fee and skipped the Wal*Mart certificate.

Then too, Wal*Mart.com can be about the same price as Samsclub.com and both are cheaper than actually visiting a Samsclub in person. But other sites' prices can even be much less.

I cannot see why you would be embarrased.
