I "joined" Sam's Club in June 2000. I made e few purchases. In June 2001 I began to receive billings for "renewal" of my "membership". I wrote on the bill that I did not wish to renew. I received two subsequent bills with interest added, on which I again wrote that I did not wish to renew.

Finally on SUNDAY, 21 October 2001, at 8:30 AM I received a phone call from "Steve" of Monogram Bank who stated my credit rating was imperiled by my not having paid the billings. I told him of my repeated written requests to cancel my membership and he told me to call 1-800-964-1917 about the matter.

The next day I called the number and spoke to "Laurie" (ext 1552) who said, "I will clean up your account and you won't be bothered by bill collectors" She said to look in the fine print where it says "I agree that my annual SAM'S CLUB Membership fees---will be automatically billed to my SAM'S CLUB Personal Credit Account----". (There is no provision for an "Opt Out" in the contract.)
I thought that was the end of it, until I found that the "late payment" was still on the Trans-Union and the other two credit reporting agency reports.

I then made personal contact with SAM'S CLUB agents in Colorado Springs where I originally signed the contract and they made some calls and said it had all been a big mistake and they would see to it that my credit report was cleared. I subsequenly spoke to two different company representatives who assured me that my credit reports would no longer reflect the alleged "slow payment".

Yesterday I received my Trans-Union report and there was the "slow pay" with an admonition.

After 79 years of perfect credit I rue the day that I ever became involved with such a company. I will continue to pursue the issue, but it is taking up a lot of my time and energy. Beware of the fine print!!
