I took my 1998 Ford F-150 to them because of a problem I was having with the truck dying on me. Somtimes when it was cold it would crank over and over and never start. Then it started randomly dying while going down the road so I took it in to them.  They charged me $80 for a "DIAGNOSTIC" that was suposed to tell me what was wrong with it. Later that day they called and said that we needed to replace the fuel pump and since it was inside the tank it would cost $730. I asked them how sure they were that that was the problem because a repair of that size ment using all of our vacation money for this year. He said 100% sure. We agreed and they did the work.  The next day it would not start. When it finaly did start later that day we took it back to them. They kept it for several days and said they could not get it to act up so they could not diagnose it. We came and got the truck and later that night it would not start. It did not start the next day so they sent there mechanic over to our house to check it. It would not start for him so they towed it in to there shop. The next day I called and they said that it started when go it to the shop so they could not diagnose it. I told them that some friends of mine said it sounded like the distributor. Days later they came to the conclusion that it was a problem with the distributor and they replaced it.  I said that there was no way that the fuel pump was my original problem. My truck has 2 fuel tanks so I asked if they were inline tankes that fed off the same pump or do they have a seperate pump for each tank. He said they had seperate pumps and they only replaced the rear one. I said I'm not a mechanic and I know that makes no sence at all. I said for you to have been rite bolth of my fuel pumps had to go out at the same time and your magical fix for this was to replace only one.  He told me that he did the distributor work free of charge because of the mis-diagnosis. When I asked him what the cost of the distributor job would have been he said $350. When I asked him why he was charging me for the fuel pump when it was the distributor he said I was lucky he did not charge me for both repairs. Do not take any vehicle to these crooks they cant even make a correct diagnoses with there machine they charged $80 for. I dought it even got hooked up. The worst thing is that they charge you for things you never needed. I feel like someone that left there vehicle to get an oil change and wound up with a $750 set of tires. When You say "hay man I didnt order tires!!" there responce is "Oh dont worry we through in the $19.95 oil change for free.

Bad bussiness...

The sadest thing is that I had to tell my 4 kids that they could not see there grandmother in Washington state this year because some crook wanted to line hid pockets.

Depending on the engine in your 98 F-150..it is either an "EDIS" or "C.O.P." type ignition system..no distributor. But nonetheless, the problem was misdiagnosed.

We do read on this site that when mechanics misdiagnose they don't take responsibility. They often use "guess work" by changing parts until the vehicle is fixed and charge the customer for the "diagnosis" and the parts/labor.

The problem was intermittent so they most likely assumed this was a fuel pump due to the symptoms but really had no way to verify other then to replace it and "hope" the problem stops. Should the customer be responsible for this?? I am not so sure. Consider that they did charge $80.00 for diagnosis and told the customer the pump needed to be replaced.  Just trying to look at all sides fairly.

In a way you are fortunate they didn't charge you for the fuel pump and whatever ignition problem they repaired next which turned out to be the actual problem. Not to say this was enough, but they did eat the cost of the ignition system repair, at least that is something.

Out of curiosity what does it say on the invoice that they repaired or replaced the second time since it could not have been a distributor? I am wondering if it really was a $350.00 repair.

There is no distributor on any of the available engines for your truck.

Your expert friends do not know what they are talking about.
