I took my 92' Jeep Cherokee to have the Thermostat replaced because it was undercooling the engine. The service advisor told me it would be about two hours before he knew anything. I waited 2 hours. When I called to get a status report, the advisor told me that I also needed a new radiator. I almost flipped. $700.00 for both and he would give me a 10% discount. I declined the radiator because I didn't notice aqny fluid running from where the radiator was.

I returned to the dealership and was in the waiting room. The advisor and a mechanic came in and the mechanic showed me a very mangled thermostat and told me that "this is your thermostat, And I'm afraid that with a new one in place, it will cause the radiator to fail completely" They call this trick, "bait and switch" That was not my thermostat, and if it was, then someone tampered with it. Thermostats don't fail like that. The spring usually breaks or the diaphragm gets stuck. (2 failure modes) The reason the advisor brought the mechanic in was to validate the lie. "watch for this" It's a very old trick. The reason they did this is because the repair was not enough to make it wortyh their while.
