I recently purchased a new Weim from Sheila Rush and was told that my puppy "was a fat little puppy who loved to eat." My puppy weighed 6.3 lbs when I picked him up, his ribs were showing, and to top it all of he had giardia and another intestinal parasite. The day after picking him up I called the kennel and asked about diarrhea and they told me that his panacure and soft diet would cause diarrhea. Okay, I guess I could by that, but the diarrhea was blood and mucous. I then called my vet and took him in and was told that he had these parasites and she placed him on 3 different medications. I then called Rush Kennels and was given the "Oh, well he got the panacure but that doesn't always get everything." They didn't offer anything. So after talking to 6 reputable breeders in Ohio I find out that this is definately not normal and that these bills should be covered by any reputable breeder. I called Rush kennels back they denied ever even talking to me about it the first time and told me it was too late to do anything about it because they needed a certified vet report WITHIN 24 hours, and then I had to drive back to North Carolina to let their vet check it out and then they still wouldn't cover any vet bills. They say they guaratee against genetic defects (hips, etc.) for 1 year. You can't even get OFA films till the pup is two, AND you can't get them anyway because OFA won't recognize the dog as purebred because they are not AKC registered. Speaking of registration I specifically told them I was interrested in breeding and showing and asked if they were registered and they told me yes ( at this time I was unaware there were registers outside of AKC in the US) and they are UKC registered. This is not even a recognized register in the United States. I can now not breed or show my pup because in the US he is not recognized as a purebred dog (which he probably isn't, they lied about everything else.) So with all of my complaints I will add that when I placed a deposit on my pup he was 4 weeks old. They next day I called after seeing that you have to request to have dew claws removed (by the way this is an AKC recommendation as well as the recommendation of many vets) and got the run around that it causes a scar and they will have a bald spot, yada yada yada. I said I still wanted them removed and then they tell me I have to have my request in by time they are 3 days old!!! Eventually they finally relented and removed the dew claws. Then comes the time to pick up my puppy. I asked to come down on Friday and see him, then pick him up to take him home on Saturday. (I live 7 hours away) They made a big deal out of it saying that they only set up appointments to pick up pups not just to visit. I never even laid eyes on him till I did pick him up. So I picked him up on Friday, made him stay in a strange hotel away from his Mom, then drive 7 hours back to his new home. Stressful for a pup. Oh and did I mention that they told me he would be puppy pad trained and that he would know his name? Nope. In fact he won't even go on a puppy pad. As far as his name for the first 3 days he wouldn't even blink if you said his name. Well now I do have an adorable pup, even though I paid way too much for a dog that's not even considered purebred and was sick when I got him, but I wouldn't send a stray to live at that kennel where it is apperent that they don't take that good of care of their dogs anyway. I'm just happy to know that he now lives in a good home and will be well taken care of. Just beware buyers. This lady is a not a reputable breeder. In fact her AKC registration privilages were revoked for her breeding non-purebreeds(you can look it up on the AKC minute reports), that why her dogs are registered with a generic kennel club.

Hopefully you have found these reports BEFORE purchasing a puppy from Rush. Unfortunately, we did not...

Ask yourself:

WHY do they breed SO MANY different breeds at one time?

HOW can they have puppies ALL the time? In any color you would want?

WHY aren't you allowed to see the parents and where the puppies are being cared for? Health and sanitation risks aside, there must be SOME way to see how they operate, especially if it's so state-of-the-art...

WHY isn't this facility in good standing with AKC?

WHY is it using a registration such as UKC that requires no ethical standards? Not United Kennel Club. It's Universal Kennel Club. Look it up.

WHY are they so quick to argue about BBB or OBB? What about the situation at hand? Why not address the real concerns???

WHY are these puppies leaving their facility WITHOUT any kind of real paperwork from a named vet?

WHY do they only guarantee THREE days of health???

WHO is the vet who cares for their breeding stock and offspring?

WHO is writing the glowing recommendations they speak of? Can you be sure it isn't one of them?

WHO is this so-called disgruntled employee? Maybe someone with a conscious and a heart?

And finally, do your research FIRST!!! I cannot stress enough how important this is. Contact your local breed rescue program and ask if they have any experience with them. Search for online communities of your breed. They are sure to have a wealth of information about the breeder you are considering.

In our case, we found this information too late. After we realized what was happening, we also realized it was too late to get any kind of resitution from this place. I bet that other people in our situation came to the same conclusion, that it wasn't worth the time, effort, and stress of dealing with such a crooked business.

At the very least, if you have suffered at their hands, let your voice be heard in some way. Make a complaint anywhere you can. Places like this will continue to thrive and will continue to make money at the expense of uneducated buyers and at the expense of the animals who have no choice... UNLESS we spread the word that this is UNACCEPTABLE!

Rush Kennel -- say what you will. Go ahead and defend yourselves. But the day will come... Even if we never see it, I have faith that justice will be served in some way.

Follow up. I filed report with the Better Business Bureau, to which they have still not responded. I also checked out this Business Bureau to which they say they are affiliated and have no complaints. It is not the same as the Better Business Bureau. It is called Online Business Bureau. This is how they get business. The register with places that no one has ever heard of or think to complain to. Also, they have stated that they are boycotting the AKC for its support of the PAWS bill. I don't know alot about it, but from what I have read it will help shut down the puppy mills. No wonder Rush Kennels doesn't support it. They are the #1 Puppy Mill in NC, so they are probably one of the first of the list to be shut down.
