On April 28th Dana and I were eating at a  Shoney's in Branson Missouri prior to heading back to Memphis.  After finishing my meal, I headed to the restroom.  Almost immediately upon entering the restroom, I fell to the floor because the floor was so slick.  The floor was not wet, but there was a slick film on the floor which was apparently left from the solution that was used to clean the floor.

I tried to get up, but my feet kept sliding out from underneath me.  I yelled for help, but no one came to help me.  I laid on the floor for about ten minutes and I decided I better try to get up because I still had to go to the bathroom.  I crawled over to the handicapped stall and pulled myself up on the toilet.

Unfortunately, the strain of doing this caused me to defecate on myself.  Dana came to check on me by this time.  She saw one of my shoes and both crutches on the floor outside the stall. She stated that the floor was slick to her and she asked if I fell.  I told her that I did fall and I needed a change of clothes.  The husband of the couple we were vacationing with went out to the van and brought me a change of clothes.

I struggled greatly to get undressed and somewhat cleaned up because of my cerebral palsy.  The stress I was under made my legs even stiffer than usual. After struggling for almost an hour, a Shoney's worker named Mark talked me into letting him help me get dressed.  I was still slipping on the floor as I tried to make it to the sink to wash my hands.  I pointed out to Mark that my feet were still sliding at the sink.  I told him that I wanted to speak to the manager.

The manager had to come to the restroom because I was unable to exit the restroom safely.  The manager and Mark had to help me get out of the restroom.  Unfortunately, the residue on my crutch tips and my shoes still caused me to slide on the floor.  The only way I could get out of the restaurant was for the manager to put the non-slip runner which is used in the kitchen on the floor for me to walk on.

On the way home I reported the incident to Shoney's corporate office in Nashville TN.  While I wasn't injured in my fall, I felt that Shoney's should compensate me in some way because of the extreme embarrassment and distress this caused me.  Well, I was told today by Shoney's insurance company than their floor is non-slip and there is no problem with their cleaning solution.

Clearly, Shoney's does not care about their customers and in particular their customers with mobility issues.  I encourage everyone to share this story with their friends and boycott Shoney's.
