Sixt Car Rental claims to be a premium rental car agency. They boast slogans such as “German luxury guaranteed” and “50,000+ German cars”. Thought I’d try them. I usually book Avis, but was interested by the reasonable price in their 5-series/E-class segment; it was only a little more a day. I did not go through some discount website, but booked directly on the Sixt website.

In reality, they are running a scam. At arrival at the airport, they claimed they ran out of cars and the only ‘similar’ car available was a Volvo. Not sure how they figure a (Chinese-owned) Volvo is equivalent to BMW/Mercedes, especially since they are a German company.

Not only that, it was at 38500km on a maximum lease of 40000km. So they could only give it for 3 days out of my 2 week stay. Someone would call me later to ‘figure it out’ and get me the correct car from a different location. When I got the call, all I got was ‘just keep it’.

My take is they only keep 1 or maybe 2 premium cars at each location and force customers to cheaper cars. In their lot at the airport, saw very little premium German cars.

The car itself was rundown as well, full of scratches and the interior was not clean.

Don’t fall for their scam. I got lucky and only paid a slight premium, but they usually ask a lot more. Quality of cars is poor, quality of service is poor.
