I needed a hair trim so I decided to go across the street from The University of the Miami, where I am a student, to the Skoon Salon, which is a branch of Aveda. I had scheduled an appointment for 1 and had to wait a good 30 minutes after 1 before they got to me. I asked the stylist to trim my hair about an inch and half. She ended up cutting off a good 3 to 4 inches and the layers are very sloppy.

They charged me $100, which I find to be an outrageous price for a haircut, considering that other Aveda salons I have visited usually charged around $40 for the same service. Then the woman who cut my hair had the audacity to tell me that I was being given a discount, and that normally they would have charged $85 for a cut and $65 for a blow dry. I find that VERY had to believe. There are no prices listed anywhere in the salon, and I feel as though I was completely ripped off seeing as they only cut and dried my hair, providing no other services. I had a friend call the store and ask their prices. She was told that a hair cut started at $45. I do not understand how mine could have possibly cost an additional $55.

Aveda/skoon ripped me off, too

I'm a senior at the University of Miami, and I went to Skoon directly across from campus last year to get my hair cut and colored (not highlighted or anything special...just colored a basic brown). They told me it would be around $120, which sounded reasonable. After everything was done, they ended up telling me that I owed them over $400 dollars, due to conditioning treatments, special services, blow drying, etc. I explicitly asked for only the cut and color and couldn't believe the audacity they had in trying to rip me off, especially after they'd already given me the price before we started. I wasn't able to pay them-- I didn't have that kind of money on me, I'd saved up for months in order to afford the services to begin with, and I literally had to call my parents and beg for them to help me. It was unbelievable. On top of everything, the color didn't look good, anyway. Don't listen to anyone say that this is a good or reasonable salon-- they absolutely and purposefully ripped me off, and I've heard similar complaints from other students.

Of course they are not cheap, it is a high end salon. If you are concerned about pricing, you should check first, however, they are not consistent with their pricing. I should know, I used to work there. And their pricing is not typical of other Aveda salons, everything is charged separate. In a high end salon, things are usually included like the hairstyle. So, in a sense, they do trick you and the reply every time is "this is a high end salon!" making you feel like you are less than thou. I found too many things unethical (which is exactly why I left). For one, after I left to go to another Aveda salon, a client of mine went in Skoon for a quick eyebrow wax, since it was by her work, and was offered to do threading instead. Then the owner offered to do her cheek with threading. But she worded it like she was doing something extra for her since the client had never experienced threading before. When the client got to the register, she was being charged $50 for what was supposed to be a $20 eyebrow wax, roughly. Then to top it all off, the owner proceeded to tell my client her hair color (knowing that that I did it) was bad and that she needed to do her hair at Skoon. When she replied she liked her color, the owner told my client the salon I worked at was not a real Aveda salon because we use other than Aveda color. Which is not true. As for "Peggy" you probably get treated like you do because you spend a lot of money there. That's all they really care about. I bet you have a salon of retail at home, don't you?

LONG-TERM CLIENT DEFENDS SKOON

#7Consumer Comment

I have been going to Skoon ever since they opened, for haircuts, coloring, manicures and facials. I have taken several of my sons there for haircuts. Over the years, I have met many Skoon employees, as well as the owners and their children. On every occasion I have been treated with complete respect and consideration, both as a person and in regard to my wishes concerning my haircuts, coloring and so on. To say I am shocked at Jennifer's comments is putting it mildly. These are good people and their employees are highly skilled. Their prices are not cheap, but they are posted, and I, for one, would never receive a service before first checking the price. This is a high-end salon, using top-notch products, where one is treated like a valued client, not a number, and it is priced accordingly. If you want a cheap haircut, try Supercuts.

Never have we over charged any of our clients for any of the services which have been done in our salon. There are no prices listed in the store because we are not a convenience store; we are a high-end salon & spa. Prices are ALL available on our menu which is located at the front desk. MINIMAL prices START at $45 for haircut and $55 for styling which total $100 for SHORT HAIR. There are additional charges for longer hair. YOU WERE GIVEN A DISCOUNT! Please don't claim that we charged an additional $55 for your haircut; HAIRCUTS DO NOT INCLUDE BLOWDRY.
