I went on Craigslist.com to find a home rental in my area. I found a very nice listing with pictures and responded. I received a very detailed and personal response from 'Steve Baxter' telling me that he couldn't give me an exact address due to previous problems with people bothering the current tenants. The email asked that I fill out a form that would provide him with non-sensitive credit information by clicking on a link to a credit reporting site.

This link took me to www.smartcredit.com where I was offered a free trial. I put in my email address to get further in the site, and I realized that I really shouldn't have to do this so I stopped and never went further. I now get 40+ spam emails a day and requests from smartcredit.com to finish my registration using my credit card for a "5 day free trial". I responded to "Steve" and asked if I were at the right site, but of course I never got a response.

I just so happened to get another response from someone else named 'Wesley' who gave me the same detailed story about not being able to give out an address and to click on a link to a credit reporting site...and guess what site that was?

I filed a BBB complaint and I was told that they didn't have anyone do this, someone did it on their own (for fun I guess?)  and that I'll have to sit and click on 'Unsubscribe' for every single spam email I get.

SmartCredit.com - Phony ads on CraigsList in Sacramento

#2Author of original report

I received a last response from SmartCredit.com after filing a BBB complaint. They said that they don't condone fraudulent advertising. I wrote back and said that it doesn't seem logical that someone would spend their day writing elaborate emails and then provide a link to their website. They said I got spam from CraigsList and not them. BS! I have decided to forward every single spam email I get as a result of their site to their customer service. This website should be shut down.
