In June 2010 I purchased a 2005 GMC Jimmy with 52,000 Km from what I believed to be a well established, reputable dealer in Kamloops, BC ~ Kamloops Hyundai - co-owned by Anthony Muzzillo of Smith Chev Cadillac.   Cosmetically the vehicle was in good shape and appeared to have been well taken care of.  With such low mileage, who would expect a major problem?  I purchased the vehicle in good faith.  Five months later, with 62,000 on it, the transmission failed to the tune of $3161.14!

The mechanic I took it to said the transmission had been going for a while because of all the fine debris in the pan and the torque converter finally just failed.  On further inspection my mechanic told me that the transmission had been out of the vehicle once already because the bolt that holds the transmission fluid dip stick was gone.  The only way to remove that bolt is to pull the transmission.  Hmmmm......  He also told me that 5 months ago, that transmission would have been slipping and they SHOULD have noticed it.  Obviously they chose to ignore that and pass the problem on to me.

The history of the vehicle, that I got from the salesman (Kevin) was that it was a friend of his who was a contractor who traded the vehicle in because it was 2 door and they needed a 4 door because of their growing family.  My mechanic told me the only way a transmission would blow like this is if it had been towed behind an RV or was used to haul heavy loads.  Contractor -> heavy loads -> hmmmm....

I spoke with co-owner Anthony Muzzillo after his sales manager Doug Weeks hung up on me!!  Mr Muzzillo felt confident that they did a good inspection on the vehicle and because i didn't purchase the extended warranty ...too bad for me.  Would you feel the need to buy an extended warranty on a 5 year old vehicle with 52,000 Km?????
Think twice about where YOU want to purchase your next vehicle!

As a vehicle owner, and a worker in the automotive industry for many years, I can sympathize with your frustration over an unexpected service bill. They suck, but they do happen.

When you purchase a vehicle from any dealer or person without a warranty you are taking a gamble that nothing will go wrong, or that at least the money you save on the warranty cost will be greater than any potential problems with the car. This seems to be the case with your complaint. When you don't purchase an extended warranty you are willingly taking the risk that your vehicle may have issues down the road.

If you are going to try and save money by opting out of an extended warranty, it is within your right (and usually a good idea) to have the vehicle inspected by a third party mechanical shop. For a small amount of money the shop should be able to tell you what parts of the vehicle are going to need servicing or replacing and when. A dealership will always do a full vehicle inspection before selling a used car, but everyone is human and with hundered's of thousands of moving parts in a GMC Jimmy occasionally very minute details that (in this case ones that would be only viewable with significant work) may be overlooked.

In your particular case it cannot be ascertained whether or not the wear of the transmission was detectable when the vehicle was sold to you. The fine debris in the pan could easily have been a result of the latest (and fatal) transmission fault, and the dipstick could be caused by having a regular transmission fluid change without fully securing the cap (could be any shop or dealer the previous owner dealt with). Neither of these proves or even suggests negligence on part of the dealer. The fact the previous customer may or may not have been a contractor really has nothing to do with it either.

If you do not purchase extended warranty and do not have the vehicle inspected prior to purchasing it you are knowingly taking a risk. Just because in this case it didn't pan out, doesn't mean it is anyone's fault but your own. In conclusion I am sorry but I find no fault of the dealer as mentioned by you in this report. The dealer probably could have offered you an incentive such as reduced shop rate to fix the transmission or some winter tires, but really you had no reason to write and post this report.

Interesting But Telling Statement By The Mechanic

Here's what that mechanic said, according to you:  "He also told me that 5 months ago, that transmission would have been slipping and they SHOULD have noticed it."

That's an interesting statement because if that was true then five months ago YOU should have experienced slipping during a test drive...that is if you took a test drive!  However, in your report, you said you didn't start having transmission problems until as you put it, "five months later".  In other words, nobody experienced a transmission problem until you had the car five months which completely invalidates the mechanic's claim.  And, if five months ago the dealer "chose to ignore the slippage" then so did you.

Whether or not you chose to buy an extended warranty is entirely your decision.  Its not the dealer's fault you didn't buy it.

Am I saying the dealer sold you a car which did not have problems?  No.  But that was five months ago.  In all probability that transmission was on its last legs but was not slipping five months ago otherwise you would have reported the problem the day you bought it.
