Spencers gifts SM scared of a lot of competition! jersey city New Jersey
A little history about myself.
I am 23 and ive been a manager for 7 years now. I have managed 10 to 30 employees at a time.
Two years ago I began working at Spencers Gifts, and at the interview ( Assistant store manager) I made it clear to the DSM I was interested in working at to advance and maybe take her job one day.
After two years of working hard to prove myself the opportunity presented itself. I was up for the promotion and highly recommend by both my SM and DSM for the position. Due to relocating to a different part of the mall the final decision was "up to corporate" and I was to become "acting store manager" without a temporary raise and no substitute for my old position.
I ran that store on my own (no asstitance no complaimts) well after I was told that I couldn't have the position because of the move and the projected volume. I was instructed to help the new manger get settled in. The store manager that was appointed was so anxious to move to the new store she neglected her responsibilies and she was very disconnected with her employees.
In the mist of her neglect, I lost my keys and I had to open the store late ( even though I was 15 minutes early) because I had to wait for another manager to open the store. Shortly after opening the store I called the dsm to inform her about what happened she replied it was fine dont worry about it. She then immediately starts grilling me about the new sm and why she was so unhappy and the store was sinking. I told her how I felt and she got angry saying that she isn't going to believe that the manager "she appointed" isn't doing her job. After she told me to shut my mouth and finished yelling I told her I no longer wished to be a SM but I would still like to be employed by spencers. I got written up 10 days later ( company policy is 72 hours)
A little less than two months later I opened the store late (which was my fault) and no one said ANYTHING. Two times opening the store late is an automatic termination. Yet I worked the next 72 hours no mention of anything. My day off my 7 month old son gave me the pink eye. I was out of work ( work and doctors orders) for a little over a week. The entire time I was out I communicated with the sm about my doctor visits and when I would be able to come back to "work." I returned to work with my doctors note and worked for 7.32 hours (around the fifth hour the seam of my pants busted open and the sm said it wasn't noticeable.) At the end of my shift I was informed that I had been terminated for opening the store late 19 days prior.
When I got home I read the termination letter fully and it said I was terminated immediately effective immediately 9 days prior to my return to work! The whole time I was sick I was led to believe I had a job! She held me against my obligation with a hole to expose my under wear! This was the most belittling thing anyone has ever done to me.
I feel like this whole thing was personal. She trained my replacement (who was not supposed to be promoted according to the dsm) 3 months before I did anything wrong. She didnt follow the company policy for discipline or termination. She made racial remarks, threatened that she's not afraid to hit anybody that doesn't do what she says, and always complained that she only likes women who are butch! She even used to mock me ( my voice is kind of annoying)
I say shame on spencers for training this woman to be a manager let alone a store manager! And allowing her to be an employee for seven year's! Just saying I ran the store for two months and received a 100 store review, the dsm didn't even score the store when she came to evaluate the manager she appointed -a month later because it would've been so bad. I guess we see who was better suited for the job!
