Complaint Review: Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines Bait and Switch, Miramar Florida

It's likely that the language was in the small print, However, this airline is masterful at misdirection on their web site. I would have been fine with a menu of what each thing cost so that I could calculate the savings up front and decide what airline to use. Not so with Spirit. It's like playing hide the ball. Every aspect costs, including the opportunity to select your seat, not just the seat. Not only that, at the gate, the agent in LGA was announcing that if you had not paid for your luggage, or carry on previously it would cost $400.00 at the gate. Ultra low caliber, not just ultra low cost. Not to mention that we played musical gates prior to leaving and both trips were very late after several gate changes.

Only worth the savings if you are going point to point with a handbag and carry on your own food and beverage. Only the aggravation is free.

Unless you were with me at the gate at EWR, you could not possibly have heard the gate agent announcing that all checked bags would be $400.  I was there. That is what she said. The three people that I was speaking with all heard the same thing.   I didn't meet a single person that I spoke with on either of the flights who was happy with the situation. As well, most of the comments centered around the fact that they were never going to fly Spirit again.

You really are tryiing too hard to make what was a reasonable and honest appraisal of a poorly executed and poorly managed flying situation seem like I'm unreasonable or have unreasonable expectations.  How much do you get paid to do damage control for Spirit?  They could better spend the money on improving their performance than spending it on you for defending miserable performance.

Say what you will, I'm not spending any more time on this issue. Your rude attack on my honesty lets me know who you are.

I am a business traveller and will not fly Spirit again unless it is the only option.

I've been buying tickets on Spirit now for years and nothing about their bag fees are small print.  It's an Ultra Low Cost Carrier.  You get cheap seats and anything else you want you have to pay for.  It may not be for you but, there's nothing HIDDEN about what they do.  As for your $400.00 price for gate checked items.  This is just a BOLD FACED LIE.  They do charge $100 at the gate for gate carry on items that won't find under the seat in front of you.  However, you have opportunities BEFORE you get to the gate to pay for your carry on at a much cheaper fee.  You wait til you get to the gate to pay, and you're GOING to pay more!  Gate changes happen too buddy, at EVERY carrier.
