Complaint Review: Spokeo Inc.

Spokeo, Inc. Cancel does not mean cancel to them Pasadena California

Attempting a "reverse look-up", I agreed to a 7 day trial.  I did not need, nor did I want, continued use (and because I have a tendancy to forget), I cancelled the subscription that same day.  I received a confirming e-mail with cancellation details.

Big surprise ... I was billed $14.95 today.  I called immediately, only to be told that I cancelled the 7 day trial period but that I did not cancel the monthly billing.  It's two separate cancellations.  Who would cancel a free trial?  It isn't free, by the way, it costs $.95.  They refused to credit my account.

No one should have to cancel things twice.  It is just their way of getting money for nothing.  Totally sneaky and unethical behavior.  And I didn't even get the information I needed.

Dear Ripoff Report User,

It appears you may have selected our Single Search with Premium Trial plan, which provided you with an initial $0.95 Single Record as well as additional free Premium access for 7 days. As long as the trial is cancelled within 7 days, the account does not continue. From your statement on this website, this trial was successfully disabled, but disabling one product does not automatically cancel other products which may be active on your account.

The additional $14.95 charge you saw is for the Spokeo Friends feature. During the Spokeo People Search purchase process, a promotion for a 30 day free trial of the Spokeo Friends feature is offered. If a customer wishes to activate this free trial during the Spokeo Premium purchase process, they must click on a check-box to agree to the terms of use for the trial and additionally click on the “Start Free Trial” button to enroll. Should a customer wish to decline this offer, there is a "No Thanks" button that lets the customer bypass the trial and proceed directly to their Spokeo People Search subscription.

If the free trial is not disabled before the end of the trial period, the subscription automatically renews to prevent service interruption. We try to make this renewal process clear on the Spokeo Friends purchase page by including it in the disclaimer which must be agreed to before the purchase can be processed. This information is also included in the confirmation receipt sent immediately after payment. We do apologize if this was unclear in any way.

Sincerely,

Spokeo Customer Care

It appears that my telling them I was filing a complaint may have been the catalyst to getting a refund!  While I appreciate the refund, I still do not like the behavior that started the problem.
