I signed up for a Spotify free trial 5 months ago. When I signed up I read everything about having to cancel before the end to avoid being charged, but, as a consumer dealing with a large business, I assumed that there was no way they could charge me without sending me notification, or at the very least a receipt. Naturally I then forgot about the whole thing, decided the service was not for me, and discontinued use. Unbeknownst to me, until yesterday, this entire time Spotify was slowly bleeding me dry, like a leech on my back. Except this leech is also 2D, the same colour as your skin and you will only ever know it is there if you see a weird transaction in your bank account to overseas for "premium x 1 544 pr" and then call the bank asking about it.

Upon seeing this I promptly cancelled my subscription (far more work than it should be) and contacted their customer support, expecting them to be understanding as this must happen all the time. In my email I requested a refund and at the very least that they start sending customers receipts (proper business practice I'm sure)

In return I got this "

Hi Tate,

When you started the trial, we state on our website that you need to cancel your trial before the 30 days are up in order to not be charged.

I can see that you unfortunately did not cancel in time and therefore your account began a paid subscription.

You can cancel your subscription anytime by logging in to your Subscription page:https://www.spotify.com/account/subscription/

Hopefully this fully explains what happened. Let us know if you have any further questions.

Best Wishes

Xxxx

Which of course, is exactly what I didn't want to hear. I responded explaining that I was a student with no job, plenty of free time, $52 was a phenomenal amount of money to me and that I would be happy to go to great lengths to recover it. I am still waiting for a response to this.

I would like it if you let the world know about Spotify's lack of notification (I'm sure there are others who are paying without knowing) and hopefully this might make them think it's easier to just give me my money back. (On that note, can you recommend anywhere else I should contact to complain?)

I was given a refund for one month of charge but am still out of pocket $40. In regards to the receipt issue, apparently the receipt is emailed for the original free trial but after that all receipts are only viewable online. (Which, in my mind, suggests that this is designed to trick people and they don't care.)
