On October 5, 2004, I sent in the rebate paperwork to Staples for a $10.00 rebate on a Compaq wireless mouse I bought for my laptop computer. I waited the prescribed 6-8 weeks and when the rebate did not arrive, I went to the staplesrebates.com site on 12/20/04 to check the status of the rebate. The website found my rebate and gave the status of "Your rebate is valid and scheduled for final processing".

I waited a few weeks and on 1/10/05 I checked the site again and was given the same status. At this time I decided to contact them for more clarification on the status of my rebate. I asked them why the delay in the "final processing" if they had already determined my rebate to be valid. I received a reply that informed me(once again) that my rebate was valid and forwarded onto a "Special Team" for further investigation.

Fast forward to 1/25/05. Still no rebate check and I get the same "special team" reply to another email inquiry to them. I told them that this delay (over 15 weeks now) is unacceptable since they have already indicated that my rebate is valid and that I will be reporting them on this site.

I realize that $10.00 is not a large amount of money but I also realize that when a company makes an offer (in this case a rebate) that they should honor it without any foot-dragging tactics. Many people who submit rebates do not do the follow up to ensure that they get the rebate check. Staples made a mistake assuming that I would not follow up on this.

Well I find it amazing but 1 day after I filed this report and told Staples that I had filed the report, the rebate check was issued to me. This goes to prove that these companies put the rebates on the back burner until you complain loud enough and only then do they take action.
