Harvey has also contacted me. He initially called me as an interested buyer; he than called me back explaining that he did the research on my car an thinks he can sell it for 30K (i had advertised it at 25.5K). I heard his sales pitch and the only reason I let him talk was since he was local. I received many calls from people similar to Harvey before this but none of them were local; all since posting on cars.com.

I did have Harvey send me a contract and I read it over basically he told me he is from Skyline motors which has been a used car dealership in the area for many years... reputable or not they are bigger and sell cars. i contacted their switchboard and the manager told me he is someone who puts cars on their lots to sell and is a vendor of theirs. They do not endorse or guarantee his "offerings"; he also seemed like he had gotten this call a few time before and was annoyed so that made me suspicious.

When Harvey called me back today he asked if I was willing to sign $1500 up front & non-refundable fee to have him sell my car "guaranteed" but, if he does not sell it there is no "guarantee". He had a great sales pitch and after I voiced concerns about an up front fee he said, " some brokers charge 10% to sell a car are you OK with that?" I said yes and offered him double his fee on sale ($3K) and $250 up front for his work. He was offended by my offer to pay him double on the guaranteed sale. Also, all 6 of his references failed to call me back. In my opinion for the $1500, $2500 and $5K he has been telling people he will sell their car he does put some effort towards it but, I imagine often when it gets on the lot if it sells for 5 or 10K less he does not care...

If you are selling a care I would take the trade in. Though it may be 5 or 10K less than he "says" he can get... they are not going to ask for a few thousand up front from you before making an offer.

My rating as a lawyer and anti-scam advocate? I wouldn't touch this guy with a ten foot pole.
