In hard economic times some states are trying to balance their budgets by ripping you off. North Carolina is one of these states and they are doing it by targeting military veterans. If you are not already outraged you should be.

In 1990, when I was young and stupid, I got a dwi in north Carolina. I took care of it , paid the fine and took the required classes. I had too as I deployed to operation desert storm shortly after the incident and I was not placed on any type of legal hold.

Fast forward 22 years. I'm in CaDMV renewing my license. I'm told that the stayed of NC has put a hold on my CDL. Certainly this is some sort of mistake? No? Practical joke then?

Nope. I was told that after 22 years the state had lost record of me completing my classes. I even found the cerificate of completion for my class. I was told my certificate may no longer be good and that I may have to complete the classes again even though 1. The incident is 22 years old. 2. I haven't been in any trouble since. 3. I don't even drink any more because it is so bad for you. 4. I already completed the class.

These classes are very expensive and time consuming to complete. Since I can't work without a license I have no money for this nonsense any way.

You would think the state judges and defense attorneys would be tossing these steamers out of court. They are not. They are apparently attempting to profit from the situation also.

Apparently its a big problem with a lot of military vets affected. How come no one is stepping in? The military and federal courts are apparently aware. And I'm told the burden of proof is on me to prove I completed the class. Is there something a*s backwards about that? No one can help without me paying them a ton of money I don't have.

If this is southern justice no thanks keep it. I'll be tossing my old tarheels pennant into the shutter.
