Stephen Carnes contacted me about transcribing 5 doctoral interviews for him. After giving him good instructions for several upload methods for his audio, he still could not get his audio uploaded. Rather than just leave him on his own even after he was rude becuase he couldn't get the files uploaded, I provided him with a temporary password to my file sending account for him to transfer his files to us for processing. I emailed him the information to him and he replied back saying he would try that method.

I then received an email back from him saying that he couldn't do the transcripts at this time, which was no big deal. I was notified later by my file sending company that he had logged in and used my account to send files to another company for transcribing.

Anyone dealing with this man beware, he will get information from you to illegally use for his own purposes and will ignore any emails or questions from you. I have found several people around the aurora illinois area with the name Stephen Carnes, including the principal at the Whittier Elementary School in District #87 which I believe to be the same Stephen Carnes I was dealing with.

Anyone transcribing out there should beware this unethical individual.

Update

#3Author of original report

Tue, September 30, 2008

I have received several messages from Mr. Carnes and emails also. He maintains that any use of my account was not intentional. And, even though I have repeatedly asked him not to, he has attempted to make amends by sending money. His payment is being returned posthaste.

He has assured me that he meant no harm in the use of my account and, in writing, assured me that it was only a mistake and he would not do anything like this on purpose and that it would never happen again. He seems to be sincere in this and I believe him.

Also, since he has shown good character in attempting to straighten this situation out, I have emailed the owner of this site to have the report removed. I have heard nothing from the site owner although I will continue to ask for it to be removed.

In addition, just so there is no confusion on this. There are several Stephen Carnes listed and any reference to someone you may not is not intentional. I do not have any addresses for him other than his email and the fact that he is a doctoral student in Illinois.

As I stated in my earlier update, the information I listed was what I had found through an internet site and may or may not be correct as far as his location. And, since I have not heard back from this site owner, I would like to state again that 1. His payment is being returned to him as I have not done any files for this gentleman, and 2. Mr. Carnes has show good character in attempting to make amends for the use of the account and appears to be genuinely upset that it happened. And, to be honest, the lengths he has gone through to make amends makes me believe his statement that he is a good person at heart and that he truly meant no harm.

Update on this situation

The subject in this complaint contacted me about this situation and maintains that he did not use my account intentionally and that he did not sign on and use the account on the date I stated. I offered to send him the notices of proof and he refused my offer.

I have emailed them to him anyway and offered several solutions to this matter. He maintains that this was unintentional and that he does not know how it happens and that he is an ethical person.

I have never met the man and so all I have to go on is our correspondence. At this time the situation still has not been resolved, but he did contact me and claim that his use of my account was unintentional and that he did not know it was my account he was using even though I have emails that clearly state it was my account.

I have not done any work for him and therefore do not know if he pays on time or other items like that. All I know is that he used my account without my permission to send files to another transcriber.
