The company is collecting on consumer debt that is out of statute and therefore unenforceable in a court of law. Why can they do this are they above the law?

A collection agency can attempt to collect on debt that is outside of the statue of limitations. However, they've lost any power over you after this time period has passed. All they can do is try to annoy/scare you into paying. Simply send them a Cease Communication letter via Registered Mail and that will put a stop to the collection activity
